Cleric Calls for Peace, Justice Ahead of Tanzania’s 2025 General Elections

KILIMANJARO: As Tanzania prepares for the 2025 General Elections, Bishop Dr. Fredrick Shoo of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) has called for peace, justice, and fairness throughout the electoral process.

Addressing congregants during the inauguration of a new church building at Kirua Parish in the Eastern Kilimanjaro Diocese, Bishop Shoo urged citizens to participate actively in the elections, emphasizing the importance of voting and upholding the rights of others.

Highlighting the significance of the October 2025 elections—which will see Tanzanians elect councilors, members of parliament, and the president—Bishop Shoo underscored the need for unity and national solidarity. He urged religious leaders and the wider community to encourage mass voter participation, ensuring that all eligible citizens exercise their democratic rights.

"As we approach the general elections for councilors, members of parliament, and the president, we as religious leaders call on the community to come out in large numbers and vote,” he said.

Bishop Shoo further stressed the duty of every citizen to safeguard a peaceful and transparent electoral process. He called for an environment free from intimidation or violence, where every voter can participate without fear or restriction.

"Everyone should have the right to choose and be chosen, and it is crucial that this right is respected by all members of the community," he insisted.

Religious leaders, he noted, play an essential role in promoting peace and justice, particularly during times of political change. He urged both political leaders and citizens to uphold Tanzania’s democratic values by maintaining peace and order throughout the election period.

Bishop Shoo also reminded the public that elections serve as a vital democratic tool for change, and ensuring a fair and inclusive process is fundamental to the nation's democratic advancement.

As the country moves toward the pivotal October 2025 elections, the call for peaceful and just proceedings remains a key message from religious and civic leaders alike, reinforcing Tanzania’s commitment to democracy and national progress.
