Tanzania to Launch Digital Journalist Registration System
PWANI, March 16, 2025 – The Tanzanian government is set to introduce a new digital registration system for journalists, marking a significant step in modernizing the media sector in line with evolving technological advancements.
The announcement was made today by the government’s spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, during his visit to Kwala Inland Port in Pwani Region. He confirmed that the system will officially be launched by the end of this month.
"By the end of this month, we will introduce a system to streamline the registration of journalists. Starting in April, Tanzanian journalists will no longer carry traditional press cards. Instead, they will have a digital card embedded with a QR code containing confidential information. When a journalist presents their card, the QR code will be scanned, leading to a government website that verifies their credentials," Msigwa explained.
The initiative aims to enhance efficiency, security, and transparency in journalist identification, ensuring that media professionals can be easily verified while adapting to global digital trends. The move is also expected to facilitate seamless access to press events and official engagements.
As Tanzania embraces digital transformation, this modernization effort reflects the government's commitment to strengthening the media industry through innovative solutions. The new system is anticipated to improve professionalism in journalism and provide a secure and standardized means of accreditation for reporters across the country.
