Man Found Dead by Suicide a Day After Release from Police Custody

Shinyanga, April 2, 2025 – A 35-year-old man from Ndembezi Ward in Shinyanga Municipality, identified as Athuman Idd, was found dead by suicide just one day after being released from police custody.

The tragic incident occurred in Kolandoto Ward, prompting shock and concern among local residents and authorities. Ndembezi Street Chairperson Mariam Mdoe confirmed the events, stating that the deceased’s wife had come to her office seeking a letter of surety to facilitate her husband’s release from police custody.

"She came to my office to request a surety letter for her husband who had been detained by the police," Mdoe explained. "After I issued the letter, she used it to secure his release. However, the next day, she contacted me by phone with devastating news—her husband had been found dead, having hanged himself."

The deceased’s brother, Masawe Jackson, revealed that Athuman had been apprehended by law enforcement officers for riding a motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol and without wearing a helmet.

"My younger brother was arrested for drunk driving and failing to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle," said Jackson.

In response to the incident, Mwananchi reached out to the Acting Regional Police Commander of Shinyanga, Kennedy Mgani, for a statement. Mgani acknowledged that he had not yet received information about the case due to being occupied with other official duties.

"I'm currently engaged in other work-related responsibilities and cannot confirm whether that report has reached my office," Mgani stated.

The case raises concerns about the mental health of individuals in custody and the processes involved in post-release monitoring. It also highlights the critical role of family and community support following legal or police encounters.
