Study Midwife Job Opening at MSF Tanzania

Study Midwife Position Open at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – Full-Time in Lindi

Job Opportunity – Study Midwife – 100% Full-Time

Location: Liwale, Lindi
Reports to: Epidemiological Activity Manager
Organization: Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a globally recognized, independent medical humanitarian organization committed to providing emergency medical assistance to individuals affected by armed conflicts, natural disasters, epidemics, and healthcare exclusion. Guided by neutrality, impartiality, and independence, MSF delivers aid purely based on medical need, without discrimination.

Primary Objective

The selected Study Midwife will be tasked with delivering comprehensive obstetrical care to participants in the Liwale Group B Streptococcus (GBS) study. This includes continuous maternal and newborn health monitoring before, during, and after childbirth, in line with MSF and study-specific protocols. The position also demands strict adherence to universal hygiene standards and neonatal care procedures under the guidance of the activity manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain antenatal and postnatal care, family planning services, essential and comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care (BEmONC and CEmONC), neonatal support, abortion care, sexual violence case management, and reproductive tract infection treatment following MSF's reproductive health standards.

  • Ensure PMTCT (Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission) services are conducted appropriately, including pre-test counseling, testing, and post-test counseling.

  • Collaborate with midwifery and medical teams in handling cases of sexual violence.

  • Evaluate referrals from traditional birth attendants (TBAs) to outpatient and maternal health services for complex pregnancies or deliveries.

  • Uphold strict hygiene and sterilization standards, ensuring the proper maintenance and functioning of biomedical equipment and reporting any issues.

  • Monitor and manage stock levels of medical supplies and ensure consistent availability of maternity-related drugs and equipment.

  • Provide thorough newborn care from delivery to discharge, educate mothers on breastfeeding, immunization, and warn against harmful traditional practices.

  • Respect and protect patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.

  • Oversee proper documentation and administration procedures for admissions and discharges, including issuance of birth certificates and vaccination cards.

  • Coordinate with other midwives and supervisors for seamless information transfer during shift changes and assist in ward organization.

  • Conduct normal deliveries independently, manage obstetric emergencies, and refer critical cases promptly. Initiate neonatal procedures such as cord care and vaccinations and identify anomalies or infections for further medical attention.

  • Ensure rational use of medicines and medical materials and keep stock inventories accurate and secure.

Study-Specific Responsibilities

  • Collect data and biological samples as outlined in the GBS study protocol, ensuring timely reporting and secure data storage.

  • Obtain informed consent from participants strictly in line with ethical guidelines.

  • Immediately report any protocol breaches according to ethical review board (ERB) standards.
