"Transport Minister Mbarawa directs Shinyanga Airport completion by April 2025, ensuring night landings for regional flights."

Mbarawa Directs Completion of Shinyanga Airport by April 2025
Shinyanga, February 22, 2025 – Transport Minister, Professor Makame Mbarawa, has instructed the contractor overseeing the Shinyanga Airport project to complete the construction by April 2025. This directive follows a visit by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, who highlighted the urgent need for nighttime landing capabilities at the airport.
As of now, the construction is 74% complete, with the runway fully finished, allowing daytime flights. However, following a visit by the Prime Minister on February 19, it was noted that the airport lacked proper lighting. Majaliwa mandated that the contractor ensure night operations are possible by the deadline.
During a site visit on February 21, Minister Mbarawa questioned the contractor about the procurement process for the necessary lighting equipment and emphasized the importance of timely completion. He urged swift action to ensure the airport can operate around the clock.
“We must expedite the purchase of lighting and related equipment,” Mbarawa said. "The Prime Minister wants to see night landings at this airport, so if orders haven't been placed for the lights yet, we must address this immediately."
The Minister also highlighted the project's budget, noting that the construction is estimated to cost Sh52 billion, including Value Added Tax (VAT). He emphasized that the airport would serve as a feeder hub, supporting larger airports in Mwanza and Dar es Salaam by facilitating small aircraft, such as the Bombardier Q400.
Shinyanga Governor Anamringi Macha pointed out that the new airport would significantly ease air travel for local mineral traders and benefit neighboring regions like Simiyu and Tabora. He also reassured the public that the relocation of graves on the airport grounds was being handled according to local customs.
The project's timeline, as explained by Donatusi Binamungu, a supervisor from the Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads), indicates that the airport project began in 2023, following a 2017 agreement. The facility is expected to be fully operational by April 1, 2025.
Once completed, the airport will feature a 2.2-kilometer runway capable of accommodating aircraft like the Bombardier Q400. The airport's construction is already 74% complete, with the runway finalized and fully operational.
