Manchester City Faces Relegation Over Financial Misconduct
Manchester City faces potential relegation as the club awaits a verdict in its financial misconduct case.

Manchester City Faces Possible Relegation Over Financial Misconduct
Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions, is facing the looming threat of relegation as the club’s prolonged legal battle over financial violations edges closer to a conclusion. The case, which involves accusations of breaching spending regulations in player signings and wage policies, is nearing its judgment day.
Earlier this month, manager Pep Guardiola stated that the verdict would likely be delivered by next month, a statement that has left both fans and experts on edge. Speaking on February 7, Guardiola remarked, “In a month, I think the judgment will come.”
The stakes are high for the club, as a guilty verdict could set a precedent, making Manchester City an example for other teams that fail to adhere to financial fair play regulations. If found guilty, City could face severe penalties, though it is unlikely to prevent them from competing in the English Football League (EFL) competitions. However, the repercussions may include relegation to lower leagues, such as the Championship, League One, or League Two, depending on the rules of the respective league.
Kieran Maguire, a football finance expert, weighed in on the potential consequences for Manchester City. He suggested that the club could face point deductions, which could be substantial. Drawing a comparison with Everton’s recent punishment for a similar violation, Maguire highlighted that City could receive a penalty far harsher than the 10-point deduction Everton faced for exceeding spending limits by £10 to £12 million in a single season.
Maguire went on to explain that Manchester City could see a points reduction ranging from 60 to 100 points, a deduction severe enough to place the club in the relegation zone of the Premier League and force them into the lower tiers of English football.
