Majaliwa Orders Strict Quality Standards for Locally Produced Goods
March 20, 2025
Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has directed regulatory bodies in Tanzania to ensure that all locally produced goods, including medical products, adhere to the highest quality standards. This, he emphasized, is essential for these products to compete effectively in global markets.
Majaliwa issued this directive today, March 20, while laying the foundation stone for the construction of oxygen production plants intended for hospital use. He underscored the importance of ensuring that the market is supplied with safe, high-quality, and internationally accepted products. The new oxygen plants are being constructed at the TOL Gases facility in Temeke, Dar es Salaam.
A Major Boost for Tanzania's Healthcare Sector
According to the Prime Minister, once completed, the project will have the capacity to produce 4.1 million liters of medical-grade oxygen annually, starting in 2026.
“This initiative will significantly improve the availability of medical oxygen in hospitals and health centers across the country, while also reducing the cost of oxygen by 35%. As a result, healthcare services for citizens will be greatly enhanced,” Majaliwa stated.
He further emphasized that the project aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure the widespread availability of medical oxygen, making it accessible in every healthcare facility nationwide.
“This project will play a crucial role in increasing the supply of oxygen in hospitals and dispensaries across Tanzania. By doing so, it will help reduce mortality rates caused by respiratory diseases, maternal complications, and infant fatalities,” he added.
Government Commitment to Quality Healthcare
Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Godfrey Mollel, highlighted the significance of the initiative, stressing that the oxygen produced through this system will meet stringent quality standards. He noted that this will help strengthen healthcare services and contribute to the reduction of preventable deaths in Tanzania.
Meanwhile, TOL Gases Managing Director Daniel Warungu praised the government’s dedication to enhancing healthcare services, commending its commitment to improving medical infrastructure for the well-being of all Tanzanians.
