Kibong'oto Hospital to Become Infectious Disease Institute
Kilimanjaro: In a significant move to enhance Tanzania’s healthcare system, Health Minister Jenista Mhagama announced that Kibong’oto Infectious Disease Treatment Hospital, located in Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region, will undergo an upgrade to become an Infectious Disease Institute. This initiative is part of broader efforts to bolster the country’s capacity to manage and treat infectious diseases.
Minister Mhagama made the announcement during a visit to Kibong'oto Hospital, where she reviewed the progress of several government-funded projects, including the establishment of a medical gas production unit and the acquisition of modern medical waste incinerators. These advancements are integral to strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
“We have laid out a strategic plan for the health sector, and alongside other specialized healthcare services, our goal is to demonstrate that Tanzania is fully prepared to tackle infectious diseases by ensuring our treatment systems are resilient and effective,” said Mhagama.
While acknowledging that infectious diseases can emerge anywhere, Mhagama reassured the public that with substantial investments made under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, Tanzania is well-positioned to combat such challenges. This is made possible by adhering to established health protocols and reinforcing medical infrastructure.
The upgraded Kibong'oto facility will be transformed into a center of excellence for the management of infectious diseases. Minister Mhagama expressed satisfaction with the ongoing implementation of a strategic plan developed by the Board, underscoring its importance for achieving long-term sustainable healthcare goals.
