A devastating fire in Kibaha, Pwani Region, claimed the lives of two individuals early this morning, while three others narrowly escaped. The tragic incident occurred in the Mailimoja A area within the Kibaha Municipal Council.
The blaze broke out in the residential building on the night of Sunday, March 2, 2025, as residents slept inside. According to Edwin Byamungu, the landlord of the property, the identities of the deceased are still unknown.
"I received a call in the night about the fire. Upon arriving, I found that local residents were helping to extinguish the flames, in collaboration with the Fire Brigade. Sadly, two tenants—a man and a woman—who were asleep in one room perished in the fire," Byamungu stated.
It is reported that the room where the fire started was previously owned by a person named Husna, an entrepreneur known to the landlord. The landlord confirmed he did not recognize the deceased.
As efforts to control the fire continued, law enforcement arrived at the scene, collecting the remains of the victims and transporting them to the Pwani Regional Referral Hospital in Tumbi.
Several tenants who survived the blaze described their shock when the fire erupted in the middle of the night. They made attempts to put it out, but the flames were too strong.
"We are still unaware of the fire's cause, though it started in the room where the two fatalities were sleeping," said Jonathan Antony, a tenant.
Komba Mustapha, another resident, described how he was startled by the screams for help, and upon opening the door, he saw people trying to extinguish the flames.
"I returned home from work around six in the evening, went to bed, and was later awakened by loud voices. When I went outside, I found people still trying to put out the fire," Mustapha added.
Athumani Lusambi, the neighborhood chairman, arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the emergency call.
"We contacted the Fire Brigade, but unfortunately, all the tenants' belongings were destroyed in the fire," said Lusambi.
The local councilor of Mailimoja, Ramadhani Lutambi, expressed shock and concern over the incident, stating that it had left the community in a difficult situation.
Efforts to contact the Pwani Regional Police Commander, Salum Mkorcase, for comment on the matter have been unsuccessful, as repeated calls went unanswered.
