EAC, SADC Urged to Stay Committed to Peace in DRC

Two soldiers from the Tanzania People's Defence Force (JWTZ) recently lost their lives while participating in a peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The soldiers, deployed under the banner of the East African Community (EAC), were engaged in a confrontation with the M23 rebel group when they fell in the line of duty.

On behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Chief of Defence Forces General Jacob Mkunda extended condolences to the bereaved families, recognizing the sacrifices made by the fallen soldiers in their quest to restore peace in the region.

Tanzania has a longstanding tradition of deploying its troops to countries experiencing instability, participating in peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), or the EAC. Tanzanian soldiers are currently stationed in various conflict zones, including Lebanon, the Central African Republic, Mozambique, and the DRC, demonstrating the country’s unwavering commitment to promoting stability in Africa.

The bravery and dedication of JWTZ personnel in safeguarding peace across the continent deserve commendation. Their unwavering commitment reaffirms the fundamental belief that all human beings are brothers and that Africa remains united in its pursuit of harmony and security.

Additionally, appreciation is extended to all nations that contribute troops to peacekeeping efforts, assisting vulnerable communities grappling not only with insecurity but also with the devastating effects of climate change and widespread disease outbreaks. Their selfless efforts embody the spirit of regional cooperation and solidarity.

The tragic loss of Tanzanian soldiers in the DRC underscores the broader challenge faced by peacekeeping forces across the continent. These sacrifices highlight the need for continued resilience and support from both the EAC and SADC in ensuring that peace is achieved and sustained in the DRC.

At this critical juncture, it is imperative for all parties involved in the DRC conflict to reflect on the immense toll of prolonged violence. The pursuit of power should never come at the cost of human lives. True leadership recognizes that authority is divinely bestowed and should be exercised with responsibility, prioritizing dialogue over conflict.

The region’s leaders and stakeholders must remain steadfast in their commitment to finding lasting solutions to the ongoing strife. External forces that profit from chaos—whether through arms sales or the exploitation of natural resources—should not be allowed to dictate the fate of the Congolese people.

EAC and SADC must persist in their mediation efforts, collaborating with local and international partners to end hostilities and foster a sustainable peace in the DRC. This conflict extends beyond national borders, affecting the entire region’s stability and prosperity. Now more than ever, collective action is required to ensure that the dreams of a peaceful and thriving Africa are realized.
