Tanzania Calls on Businesses to Uphold Consumer Rights as Consumer Protection Week Begins

Dar es Salaam, March 7, 2025 – As Tanzania prepares to mark this year’s International Consumer Rights Day on March 17, businesses and service providers across the country are being urged to adhere strictly to consumer rights when offering products and services.

The call was made by William Erio, the Director General of the Fair Competition Commission (FCC), during a brief event launching the country’s Consumer Protection Week, with the climax of the celebrations slated for March 17, 2025.

During the event, Erio reminded the public that consumers are entitled to eight key rights, including safety concerning the products and services they purchase. Additionally, consumers have the right to clear information about pricing, volume, and the materials used in the manufacturing of goods.

"These rights have been recognized internationally since they were first introduced by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in 1980," Erio noted.

He further highlighted that while consumers enjoy these rights, they also have certain responsibilities. Consumers are encouraged to be vigilant and thoroughly review product instructions and seek necessary information before making a purchase.

"It is the responsibility of the consumer to inquire about any relevant details regarding a product or service to understand its quality and proper usage," he explained.

Erio emphasized that respecting these rights is essential to ensuring consumer safety. However, he also noted that some individuals may not be fully aware of these rights. In light of this, various media platforms, consumer clinics, and seminars for university students and other community groups will continue to promote consumer education as the celebrations progress.

The national observance of Consumer Rights Day on March 17, 2025, in Dar es Salaam will be graced by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Selemani Jafo.

"This day presents an opportunity for the FCC, as the authority responsible for consumer protection, to fulfill its legal duty of educating the public about their rights, duties, and remedies, while reminding stakeholders, including businesses, to operate in compliance with laws, regulations, and the principles of fair competition," Erio added.

Magreth Otouh, the Director of the Business Conduct Regulation, also emphasized that consumers who are aware of their rights and responsibilities play a crucial role in preventing the sale of substandard products.

FCC has been leading consumer education efforts since March 8, 2024, through radio programs, social media campaigns, and seminars targeting various sectors.
