Zelensky Defends Casual Look at White House Visit

Why Is Ukraine's President Not Wearing a Suit?

On Friday, February 28, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House in the United States was marked by a contentious exchange with the hosts, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. The incident began before the formal talks even started, as Trump greeted Zelensky at the entrance, commenting on his attire in front of the media. "Today, he’s really dressed up," Trump remarked, a statement some interpreted not as a compliment, but as a subtle jab at Zelensky, who was wearing a simple black long-sleeve shirt.

The situation escalated when Trump received British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, taking a moment to inspect his suit, which led to remarks that seemed like praise for Starmer’s formal attire. Following this, as reporters were allowed to ask questions, Brian Glenn, a reporter from Real America’s Voice, a right-wing news outlet, inquired pointedly about Zelensky’s lack of formal attire.

"Why aren’t you wearing a suit? You’re in the highest office of this country, and you refuse to wear one—do you own a suit?" Glenn asked.

In a calm and measured response, Zelensky explained that he would don a suit once the war in Ukraine was over. "I will wear a suit once this war ends. Maybe one like yours, perhaps better, or maybe something cheaper than yours," Zelensky replied, adding a touch of humor to the situation.

Glenn’s question sparked an online debate. Some supported the reporter, arguing that Zelensky’s choice to not wear a suit during his visit to the Oval Office disrespected the United States, while others criticized the question as an attempt to belittle Zelensky.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia congresswoman and fiancée of Glenn, expressed her pride in the question, writing on social media, "I’m so proud of @brianglenntv for showing Zelensky doesn’t respect America enough to wear a suit in the Oval Office when he’s asking for our President’s help!"

On the other hand, outspoken British journalist and Trump ally Piers Morgan condemned Glenn’s question, pointing out that Zelensky is not the only leader who has visited the Oval Office without a suit. "What a ridiculous question. Elon Musk doesn’t wear a suit when he visits the White House," Morgan tweeted.

Historians also weighed in, reminding the public that former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill visited the U.S. president in the Oval Office during an official visit without wearing a suit.

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Zelensky has generally avoided wearing suits on his international trips, instead opting for military-style clothing in olive green or black. This has become his signature look, even during high-profile meetings with foreign leaders.
