Zanzibar Faces Severe Shortage of Heart Disease Specialists

Zanzibar grapples with a critical shortage of heart specialists, with only four cardiologists in the region and just one who can perform heart surgeries.

Zanzibar is currently facing a significant shortage of heart disease specialists, which has put immense pressure on its healthcare system. The island is served by only four cardiologists, with just one of them capable of performing heart surgery. This alarming shortage was highlighted during the Heart Team Africa - Cardiotan 2025 Conference, which also featured life-saving training for professionals across various sectors, including tourism.

The event, organized in partnership with the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) and the Ministry of Health, took place on February 24, 2025. Dr. Amour Suleiman Muhamed, the Director General of Zanzibar’s Ministry of Health, voiced concerns about the state of heart health services in the region. He stressed that the high rate of heart disease-related fatalities is primarily due to the scarcity of qualified specialists.

"Currently, Zanzibar has only four cardiologists, but only one is trained to perform heart surgery," Dr. Muhamed stated. "This highlights the need for more skilled professionals in the field to ensure effective cardiac care and save lives."

In response, Dr. Tatizo Waane, the Acting Executive Director of JKCI, reassured that the institute is committed to improving heart disease diagnosis, treatment, and research throughout Tanzania. The upcoming Heart Team Africa conference, scheduled for April 10-12, 2025, in Zanzibar, will provide a platform for international heart disease experts to discuss the latest advancements in treatment and diagnostics.

Zanzibar's Minister of Health, Ahmed Nassor Mazrui, also emphasized the importance of improving emergency and rescue services in the region. He highlighted a collaborative initiative with the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation to train healthcare workers, hotel employees, and community service providers in life-saving skills. Minister Mazrui noted that enhancing emergency healthcare infrastructure would not only save lives but also boost Zanzibar's tourism sector by attracting more visitors.
