Trump Contemplates Purchasing Used Aircraft as Air Force One Amid Boeing Delays
President Donald Trump expressed frustration over delays in the production of new Air Force One planes, stating that he is considering purchasing used Boeing aircraft from overseas to serve as the presidential fleet.
While aboard one of the two nearly 35-year-old Boeing 747-200 planes currently in use, Trump told reporters, “We’re looking at alternatives because Boeing is taking too long.” He added, “We may go and buy a plane,” suggesting he would then have it converted for presidential use.
Trump clarified that while he would not consider Airbus, the European manufacturer, he could potentially acquire a used Boeing from another country. “I could buy one from another country perhaps or get one from another country,” he said.
Boeing holds the contract to deliver updated versions of the Air Force One fleet, based on the more modern Boeing 747-8. However, delays have plagued the project, with Boeing having incurred substantial financial losses on the deal. This agreement, initially negotiated by Trump during his first term, calls for two specially modified aircraft designed to meet the high-security and operational needs of presidential travel.
The delays are primarily linked to the extensive modifications required to meet these specifications, such as advanced communications systems, air-to-air refueling capabilities, and improvements to ensure the plane’s survivability under various threat scenarios. The modifications also include self-contained air stairs for access in austere landing locations.
The delivery of the first plane, originally expected in 2024, has now been pushed back to 2027, with the second aircraft set to arrive in 2028—Trump’s final year in office, according to the U.S. Air Force.
On a recent visit to Palm Beach International Airport, Trump inspected a newer Boeing 747-800, previously owned by the Qatari royal family, highlighting the technological advancements and contrasting it with the delay in Boeing’s work on the presidential planes. The White House confirmed Trump’s visit, which underscored his displeasure with the ongoing delays in the production of Air Force One.
