Tanzanian Truck Drivers Still Subject to DRC Visa Fees Amid Ongoing Talks
LUBUMBASHI, DRC — April 2, 2025:
Tanzanian truck drivers entering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are still required to pay visa fees, despite recent announcements by the DRC government indicating an intention to waive visa charges for Tanzanian nationals.
The clarification came during a high-level meeting held in Lubumbashi, involving Roland Kashantwale, Director-General of the DRC Immigration Department, Tanzania’s Ambassador to DRC, Said Mshana, and the DRC Ambassador to Tanzania, Jean Pierre Masalla. The talks were convened to address widespread confusion following the DRC’s declaration regarding the removal of visa requirements.
Kashantwale confirmed that the waiver does not extend to Tanzanian truck drivers, who must continue paying a $50 work transit visa fee for stays of up to 30 days.
While acknowledging the importance of strengthening bilateral ties, the Director-General stressed the need for continued diplomatic engagement between the two nations to reach a conclusive agreement that would eliminate work visa charges.
Until a formal resolution is reached through mutual negotiations, the visa requirement remains in effect for Tanzanian truckers operating within DRC territory.
