Kigoma Infrastructure Projects to Boost Tanzania’s Global Connectivity

Kigoma, April 3, 2025 – The Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing key infrastructure projects in the Kigoma region, aiming to elevate the country’s international connectivity and foster regional development.

George Mkuchika, Minister of State in the President’s Office (Special Functions), announced the government’s resolve during the launch of his four-day official visit to Kigoma. His itinerary includes site inspections of major development initiatives and public meetings to engage citizens on the progress of government-led projects under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.

Speaking in Kigoma-Ujiji Municipality, Minister Mkuchika emphasized that the infrastructure projects underway are a direct reflection of the ruling party’s election manifesto. He stated, “Everything happening now is part of the election pledge. President Samia has mandated her ministers to inspect and, where applicable, inaugurate completed projects. This demonstrates the substantial and commendable work being done by our President.”

During the visit, the minister toured the ongoing renovation and expansion works at Kigoma Airport, reviewed operations at Kigoma Port, and assessed the refurbishment of key vessels including MV Liemba and MT Sangara. He reiterated the government’s determination to ensure the timely completion of all development projects in the region.

At Kigoma Airport, Narcis Choma, Regional Manager for the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), provided a detailed briefing on the scope of the airport upgrade. The project includes the construction of a modern passenger terminal, installation of a perimeter fence, erection of an air traffic control tower, and the deployment of runway guidance lighting.

According to Choma, the project—undertaken by China Railways Engineering Corporation—has an estimated budget of TZS 46.6 billion and a timeline of 18 months. Once completed, the enhanced facility is expected to dramatically increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity from fewer than 100,000 to approximately 400,000 annually.

The infrastructure upgrades in Kigoma are poised to transform the region into a vital gateway for international trade and travel, underscoring Tanzania’s broader vision of integrated national development.
