DAR ES SALAAM – Zanzibar’s President, Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, has hailed Tanzania for gaining international prestige and benefits from successfully organizing the 25th edition of the Global Quran Memorization Competition, which brought together participants from across the continents.
Speaking at the competition’s grand finale, held yesterday at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Mwinyi underscored the significance of hosting such a global religious event, emphasizing that it affirms Tanzania’s status as a peaceful and trustworthy nation capable of managing high-profile international gatherings, summits, and conferences.
Symbol of Religious Freedom and National Unity
Dr. Mwinyi noted that the competition reflects the country's commitment to religious freedom, highlighting the government’s unwavering support for religious activities without discrimination based on faith or denomination.
“This initiative was championed by our nation's founding leaders, and it plays a pivotal role in fostering national unity, social cohesion, and the preservation of peace and stability,” he stated.
Furthermore, the president emphasized the spiritual significance of the event taking place during the holy month of Ramadan, urging Muslims to deepen their engagement with the Quran, as it was revealed in this sacred period.
Acknowledging Sponsors and Promoting Islamic Education
Dr. Mwinyi expressed gratitude to Al Hikma Organization and the People’s Bank of Zanzibar (PBZ) for sponsoring and organizing the competition. He called upon Tanzanian Muslims to enroll their children in madrasa institutions to nurture future Islamic scholars and leaders.
As Ramadan enters its second phase, he encouraged believers to use the remaining days for seeking forgiveness for their sins and to extend charitable assistance to those in need, reminding them that “God cherishes those who use their resources to help others.”
Call for Financial Sector and Businesses to Support Future Events
The president also urged financial institutions and business leaders to support Quranic competitions and other religious initiatives to further enhance Tanzania’s global reputation in religious and cultural events.
