Tanzania and Hungary are advancing their cooperation in green energy and water management, with discussions focused on renewable energy, clean cooking solutions, and modern water treatment technologies.
During his visit to Hungary’s Ministry of Energy, Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mr. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, emphasized the potential for collaboration in the renewable energy sector, particularly solar and geothermal power. This came as part of his efforts to attract Hungarian investments in Tanzania’s growing green energy sector.
Mr. Kombo, acknowledging Hungary’s proficiency in energy production and distribution, encouraged the country to share its advanced waste management technologies with Tanzania. He further urged Hungary to assist in providing technical training to Tanzanians, enhancing the local workforce’s skills and knowledge in these critical sectors.
In response, Hungary’s Secretary-General responsible for environmental issues, Ms. Anikó Raisz, conveyed Hungary’s commitment to supporting global sustainability efforts. She highlighted Hungary’s readiness to establish capacity-building programs and foster technical exchanges in the energy and environmental sectors.
During the meeting, Mr. Kombo also highlighted Tanzania’s initiatives to promote clean cooking energy across Africa, in line with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership. He reaffirmed the country’s goal of ensuring that 80 percent of cooking activities rely on clean energy, which is vital for reducing environmental degradation. He further underscored Tanzania’s ambition to expand electricity access, noting the country’s active role in the recent Africa Energy Summit, where leaders resolved to connect 300 million households to electricity.
In a separate development, Tanzania and Hungary have committed to enhancing their collaboration in the water sector through the Biharamulo Water Supply Project. Mr. Kombo, together with Tanzania’s Minister of Water, Mr. Jumaa Aweso, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Mwajuma Waziri, visited Hungary’s Csepel Water Treatment Project in Budapest. Their visit aimed to explore Hungary’s expertise in water purification and supply systems.
The Tanzanian delegation met with VTK Innosystem, a Hungarian company renowned for its successful water purification projects in countries such as Rwanda, Cabo Verde, Kenya, and Indonesia. VTK is slated to implement the Biharamulo Water Supply Project, which is funded by the Hungarian government with a budget of $55.1 million.
The visit also provided an opportunity for Tanzanian officials to observe cutting-edge water treatment methods, such as ozone radiation technology, which offers a chemical-free approach to water purification.
This growing partnership between Tanzania and Hungary is a significant step forward in improving both energy sustainability and water accessibility, ensuring that both nations can benefit from the expertise and advanced technologies shared in these essential sectors.
