By Derick Milton, Itilima | February 25, 2025
Simiyu Regional Commissioner, Kenani Kihongosi, has revealed that 17 hyenas have been killed in the ongoing operation aimed at tackling the growing menace of hyenas preying on the local population, including attacking and killing children in Itilima District.
Kihongosi further disclosed that some individuals have been apprehended for illegally keeping hyenas in their homes, stressing that this is a violation of the law. He issued a stern warning to anyone housing or engaging with hyenas illegally, stating that legal action would be taken against offenders.
The regional commissioner made these remarks during a ceremony where police officers who excelled in their duties were honored with awards and recognition. The awards were presented by the Inspector General of Police of Tanzania (IGP), Camillius Wambura.
Kihongosi added that some of these individuals were found using the hyenas for various purposes, including transportation. He emphasized that such activities tarnish the region's image and should be condemned by all.
"Hyenas are not animals for transport; they belong in the wild or protected areas. These actions are unacceptable and must be condemned," he said. He also reaffirmed that anyone found keeping hyenas for illegal purposes would face severe legal repercussions.
“This is not only a disturbing situation but one that harms the reputation of our region,” Kihongosi continued. “Simiyu has much to offer, and the illegal keeping of hyenas is a criminal offense that cannot be tolerated.”
In a related development, Kihongosi urged traditional healers in the region to assist the government in educating the public about the legal consequences of owning hyenas. The aim is to raise awareness and ensure that local communities understand the seriousness of these offenses.
Simiyu Police Commander, Edith Swebe, also addressed the gathering, urging officers to maintain professionalism and adhere to the law while carrying out their duties. She reminded the officers that their actions are under public scrutiny and that they must carry out their responsibilities with integrity and diligence.
