Retired Captain George Mkuchika to Step Down as Newala Urban MP

 March 22, 2025 | Newala

Retired Captain George Mkuchika, the long-serving Member of Parliament for Newala Urban constituency in Mtwara Region and Minister of State in the President’s Office (Special Duties), has officially announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming general elections scheduled for October 2025.

Speaking at a special general meeting of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) held in Newala Town, Mkuchika cited his advancing age as the primary reason for stepping back from parliamentary duties. Despite his retirement from active politics, he affirmed his continued allegiance to CCM and his commitment to supporting the people of Newala.

“Stepping down as MP does not mean I am no longer part of Mtwara or Newala. I remain with you and will continue to work with you whenever needed. However, I feel it is the right time to rest while I still have my dignity,” Mkuchika stated.

Call for Responsible Leadership

In his remarks, Mkuchika urged CCM members and the residents of Newala to choose a capable successor who will carry forward the constituency's development agenda. He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he has received over the past two decades during his parliamentary service.

Mkuchika’s political journey spans the period when Newala District was a single constituency. Since its division into Newala Urban and Newala Rural, he has played a pivotal role in bringing transformative development to the area—particularly in sectors such as water supply, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Praises from Local Leaders

Yusufu Kateule, Chairman of the Newala Town Council, lauded Mkuchika’s dedication, compassion, and leadership, recalling his impactful contributions even before the constituency split.

Ally Mbolele, CCM’s ward secretary for Maumbika, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the MP's many contributions, noting that news of his departure has brought sadness among party members and local residents alike.

Zaituni Hamisi, Chairperson of Mtumachi Ward, echoed these sentiments, stating:

“While we respect your decision, Honorable Mkuchika, we still need you. You’ve done so much, especially in healthcare—mothers now have easy access to services in our areas, and we are truly grateful.”

A Legacy of Integrity

Newala District Commissioner Rajabu Kundya commended Mkuchika for his unwavering integrity, describing it as one of the most admirable traits that young leaders should emulate. He emphasized that Mkuchika consistently championed moral values in various public forums.

As Captain Mkuchika prepares to exit the political stage, his legacy as a dedicated public servant remains deeply rooted in the development and welfare of the people of Newala.
