John Bocco, the former Simba and Taifa Stars captain now playing for JKT Tanzania, has praised Leonel Ateba (Simba) and Clement Mzize (Yanga) for their remarkable abilities in ball control and goal-scoring.
In a recent statement, Bocco highlighted that Ateba has a strong knack for scoring, controlling the ball, and dominating the front area independently, drawing comparisons with Mzize, particularly when playing as a number 9.
“Ateba is a player with an exceptional goal-scoring ability and good ball possession skills,” Bocco said. "He is quite similar to Mzize when both are playing as strikers, particularly in their control over the ball and ability to command the forward line."
Bocco went on to explain that while there are various types of players, it is crucial to understand that player style and position play are more significant than merely observing personal preferences as a fan.
"Often, fans may get caught up in their preferences when watching matches, focusing on what they like or understand best," he commented. "However, a more technical approach should emphasize the essence of the role a player is assigned, understanding how they are supposed to play."
Though he praised Ateba’s ability, Bocco noted that the striker’s full potential has yet to be realized, as he is still in his first season in Tanzania and has much to learn.
"Ateba is in his debut season, and there’s a lot for him to adapt to. Once he masters those aspects, I believe he will be able to deliver at least 90% of his potential. It’s only a matter of time," Bocco added.
Bocco made these comments on the Instagram page of football analyst Edo Kumwembe, who had invited opinions from football enthusiasts regarding Ateba’s performance.
Record Highlights: In his first season in Tanzania, Ateba has scored 8 goals and provided 3 assists, contributing to 11 of Simba's 35 goals this season. On the other hand, Mzize has been involved in 13 goals, scoring 10 goals—tying with Jean Ahoua as the top scorer—while also contributing 3 assists.
