Anthony Gordon Withdraws from England Squad with Hip Injury
Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has been forced to withdraw from the England squad following a hip injury sustained during the Three Lions' 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Albania at Wembley.
The 23-year-old had been hoping to establish himself under newly appointed England head coach Thomas Tuchel, but concerns over the extent of his injury have cut his international involvement short. Gordon has since returned to Newcastle for further medical assessment and rehabilitation.
Tuchel, speaking after the match, expressed concern over Gordon’s condition.
“He looks injured. First of all I thought it's his stomach, but it's his hip and it does not look good. It's a bit worrying, yeah,” Tuchel admitted.
The winger’s absence casts uncertainty over England’s preparations for their upcoming qualifier against Latvia, with no replacement yet named to fill his spot in the squad. Tuchel is expected to rely on his existing options, including Marcus Rashford, who started on the left wing against Albania.
Other players who could potentially step into the role include Jarrod Bowen, Morgan Rogers, or Eberechi Eze. However, none are natural left-sided attackers, presenting a selection challenge for the new manager.
Gordon’s injury is also a concern for Newcastle United, who are currently pushing for a strong finish in the Premier League as they chase Champions League qualification. Supporters of the Magpies, still celebrating their recent League Cup success, will be anxiously awaiting updates on the winger's fitness.
WHAT NEXT FOR GORDON?
Gordon will undergo further evaluation at Newcastle, with the full extent of the hip injury yet to be determined. His recovery timeline remains unclear, but both club and country will be hoping for a swift return to action for one of England’s brightest young talents.
