Position Overview

Lutheran World Relief is seeking a Technical Manager – Extension Services and Training for the five-year USDA-funded Kuku Biashara Project, which aims to transform Tanzania’s poultry value chain into a sustainable, commercial sector. The role focuses on strengthening feed systems, enhancing animal health practices, expanding access to agricultural finance, and building capacity among extension and service providers in Mbeya, Iringa, Songwe, and Rukwa.

The position is based in Mbeya, Tanzania, and reports to the Deputy Chief of Party.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and serve as the primary expert on agricultural extension services and training within the project.

  • Design and execute a comprehensive extension and training strategy in collaboration with project leadership and specialists.

  • Oversee and coordinate all training and extension activities to ensure the adoption of high-quality, impactful methodologies.

  • Facilitate knowledge sharing, monitor performance improvements, and compile project learnings for dissemination.

  • Develop standardized training curricula, technical resources, and extension tools.

  • Strengthen internal capacity for consistent, effective training and advisory service delivery.

  • Promote agricultural extension among farmers, associations, and organizations, and evaluate the impact of training efforts.

  • Supervise sub-grantees delivering poultry-related extension services, ensuring consistent quality and support.

  • Manage Social and Behavior Change (SBC) campaigns aimed at educating farmers on best practices in poultry management.

  • Oversee the implementation of farmer field schools and other extension models to boost productivity and income.

  • Establish demonstration plots and provide guidance on sustainable farming techniques.

  • Build and maintain partnerships with both public and private sector stakeholders; represent the project at local and regional levels.

  • Contribute to the preparation of reports, manuals, and guidelines relevant to extension services and training.

  • Integrate digital tools and strategies to maximize reach, efficiency, and impact.

  • Support Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) activities alongside the project’s M&E team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Economics, Animal Husbandry, Applied Agricultural Extension, or a related field.

  • At least five years of progressive experience in agricultural extension or livestock productivity, with a strong understanding of the poultry value chain.

  • Proven expertise in training design, curriculum development, and skills transfer.

  • Familiarity with climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness, and market system development.

  • Track record of working with farmer cooperatives and rural communities.

  • Experience collaborating with government institutions, civil society, community-based groups, and faith-based organizations.

  • Fluent in English; proficiency in Swahili is preferred.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to work independently.

Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of animal husbandry and agriculture, including key value chains such as poultry, soybean, sunflower, and sorghum.

  • Understanding of nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food security programming.

  • Competence in digital tools and software relevant to agricultural development and extension.

Working Conditions

  • The role requires travel across the project’s target regions and may involve working in remote or high-security environments.

  • Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.

  • Corus Tanzania maintains a hybrid work model, requiring at least one day per week in the office.
