Heavy Rains Wash Away Two Key Bridges in Southern Tanzania
April 7, 2025 | Kilwa, Lindi Region
Transportation to Tanzania’s southern regions has been disrupted once again after two major bridges collapsed due to ongoing heavy rains in Kilwa District, Lindi Region. The Somanga–Mtama bridge and the Matandu River bridge have both been severely damaged, cutting off key road access and halting travel in the area.
The Matandu bridge, previously weakened by Cyclone Hidaya on May 5, 2024, had only recently been repaired following similar weather-related destruction that had blocked southern roadways for three days. Government agencies had moved swiftly at the time to restore access. However, with the return of torrential downpours, the same section of the highway has become impassable once again.
According to local reports, the Somanga–Mtama bridge collapsed at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2025, while the Matandu River bridge also gave way, completely severing connections between southern Tanzania and other regions.
Speaking from the scene, Hamis Juma, a traveler en route from Lindi to the Coast Region, described how his journey was abruptly cut short.
“I left Lindi heading to the Coast Region. When we reached Matandu at 6:00 a.m. today, we found the bridge had collapsed,” said Juma.
Fellow traveler Sabrina Alex expressed concern over the disruption, urging authorities to act swiftly to restore vital connectivity.
“Two bridges have already collapsed. We are stranded at Matandu. We’re calling on the government to urgently restore the link so we can continue our journey,” she said.
Despite the setback, repair works have already begun at the Matandu River bridge as contractors move quickly to provide a temporary solution and reestablish passage.
The Tanzanian government has yet to issue an official statement, but road maintenance teams remain active on-site, working to stabilize the situation amid continued rainfall.
Travelers are advised to monitor updates and plan alternative routes where possible.
