Seven Sentenced to Death as Mbeya Police Celebrate Four Years of Major Gains
Mbeya, April 7, 2025 — The Mbeya Regional Police Force has announced a series of significant achievements spanning four years, highlighting strides in criminal justice, operational efficiency, and community security under the leadership of the Sixth Phase Government and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Camilius Wambura.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Regional Police Commander SACP Benjamin Kuzaga revealed that seven individuals convicted of murder have been sentenced to death by hanging, underscoring the force’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims of serious crimes.
Commander Kuzaga attributed the success to well-coordinated operations, enhanced patrols, and the deployment of advanced digital systems, all of which have strengthened law enforcement in the region.
“In four years, we have achieved notable milestones. Among them, the conviction and sentencing of seven murder suspects to death. We also seized 40 unlicensed firearms and government trophies valued at over Sh1 billion,” said Kuzaga.
Operational and Infrastructure Improvements
The Police Force in Mbeya has also seen an increase in capacity and logistics. A total of 351 new recruits completed military training and joined the force, while 1,162 officers were promoted to higher ranks.
To bolster mobility and response times, the police acquired 14 patrol vehicles and 14 motorcycles, primarily designated for inspectors. These additions have significantly improved security oversight and rapid response capabilities.
Crime and Accident Rates Down
According to the Commander, criminal incidents in the region have dropped by 3%, while road accidents have decreased by 2.8%. He attributed this progress to the introduction of modern tools and a digitized service delivery system, alongside efforts to bring police services closer to communities through the construction of more police stations.
Additionally, 133 cybercrime suspects were arrested in connection with various online fraud networks. The force also recorded success in reducing prison overcrowding and intercepting illicit activities, including the seizure of over Sh1 billion worth of smuggled minerals and the arrest of nine individuals linked to their trafficking.
Major Criminal Convictions and Seizures
The police also made significant arrests in other serious offenses:
-
174 illegal immigrants were apprehended.
-
23 suspects found guilty of rape and sodomy were sentenced to life imprisonment.
-
Goods worth over Sh390 million, linked to smuggling operations, were confiscated.
Call for Enhanced Security Ahead of Elections
Development stakeholder Gift Mbelwa, based in Mbeya, commended the police for their achievements but urged the force to intensify efforts, particularly as the country approaches the general election period.
“Election seasons tend to see a spike in criminal activity. The police must enhance their presence and focus on preemptive measures, especially in preventing crimes such as the killing of innocent civilians,” Mbelwa said.
The Mbeya Regional Police's four-year report illustrates a consistent push towards professionalism, modernization, and community-oriented policing, positioning the region as a safer place amid growing national security concerns.
