Trump Defends Tariffs Ahead of Volatile Market Open

Trump Compares Tariff Impact to 'Taking Medicine' Amid Market Uncertainty

Just hours ahead of what analysts predict could be a historically turbulent market opening on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump likened the effects of his tariff policies to taking medicine—unpleasant but necessary for healing.

“I don’t want anything to go down, but sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday.

Defending his administration’s approach to imposing tariffs on multiple countries, Trump reiterated his long-standing belief that these measures would ultimately bring jobs and investment back to the United States.

“What will happen to the market, I can’t tell you. But our country is stronger than ever,” he added.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba responded to the latest round of U.S. tariff hikes, announced the previous week, by pledging government support to companies affected by the new levies.

Japan, a major exporter to the U.S., confirmed it will implement safeguards to protect domestic employment while continuing to push for concessions from Washington in future trade negotiations.

In another key development, President Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. According to the U.S. publication Politico, the two leaders are expected to address the 17% tariff imposed by the Trump administration on Israeli goods.

Speaking on Sunday, Netanyahu expressed hope that he would be able to secure relief from President Trump regarding the trade duties.
