Christian Eriksen to Leave Man Utd as Ajax Return Becomes Likely
Manchester, UK – March 18, 2025 – Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen is set to leave Manchester United this summer, with a potential return to Ajax on the horizon. According to Fabrizio Romano, United have no plans to extend Eriksen’s contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season.
Romano confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“No doubts or changes in the plans of Christian Eriksen: he will leave Manchester United on a free transfer in July.”
This confirmation solidifies reports that Eriksen, 33, is no longer part of United’s future plans. The decision aligns with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s strategy of revamping the squad, as several out-of-favor players are expected to depart from Old Trafford this summer.
Eriksen Open to Ajax Return
Speaking to Tipsbladet earlier this week, Eriksen revealed his openness to rejoining Ajax, the club where he first made his name between 2009 and 2013. However, he also dismissed speculation about a move back to his native Denmark at this stage in his career.
“I still feel like I have a few good years abroad,” Eriksen said. “In Denmark, people often focus on family and ending their careers that way, but I don’t feel like I’m at that stage yet.”
Ajax had been linked with a move for Eriksen last summer, but a deal failed to materialize. However, the experienced midfielder has not ruled out the possibility of joining the Eredivisie giants this time around.
“I am not closing the door on anything. I will see what happens and whether it is something that fits. That was the situation last summer, and we will have to wait and see where things stand this time. Of course, interest has to come from both sides—not just from the player.”
A Storied Career Across Europe
Eriksen enjoyed a successful four-year spell at Ajax, making 163 appearances, scoring 32 goals, and providing 65 assists before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. He later played for Inter Milan and Brentford before joining Manchester United in 2022.
During his time at Old Trafford, Eriksen made 99 appearances, scoring seven goals and registering 17 assists across all competitions. The 140-time Denmark international now looks set to embark on the next chapter of his illustrious career, with Ajax emerging as a strong contender for his signature.
