Tanzania Nominates Prof Janabi for WHO Africa Role

Tanzania Officially Endorses Prof Janabi for WHO Regional Role

DODOMA, March 23, 2025 – The government of Tanzania has officially nominated Professor Mohamed Janabi as its candidate for the position of World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region Director, expressing strong confidence in his ability to secure the role amidst stiff competition.

Professor Janabi, a senior health and nutrition advisor to the President and Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), is one of four candidates vying for the prestigious position. His candidacy follows the passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the Regional Director-elect, on November 27, 2024.

The WHO officially released the list of candidates last week, revealing that Prof Janabi is the only contender from Sub-Saharan Africa. He will be competing against three health experts from West Africa:

  • Dr. N’da Konan Michel Yao from Ivory Coast

  • Dr. Dramé Mohammed Lamine from Guinea Conakry

  • Prof. Mijiyawa Moustafa from Togo

According to a statement from the WHO Regional Office for Africa, the names of all nominated candidates were submitted by WHO Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to the respective Member States.

In response to the unexpected vacancy left by Dr. Ndugulile, the WHO Regional Committee for Africa convened a special virtual session on January 14, 2025. During the session, it was agreed that an expedited process would be adopted for the election of a new Regional Director.

Member States were subsequently invited to submit their nominations by February 28, 2025. The selection process will proceed with a virtual live candidates’ forum scheduled for April 2, 2025, where the nominees will present their visions and strategies for advancing health across the African continent.

Speaking at a press conference in Dodoma, the Minister for Health, Jenister Mhagama, said Tanzania is firmly committed to securing the position. She emphasized that based on merit, experience, and professional excellence, Prof Janabi stands out as the most qualified candidate.

“This is a crucial leadership role, and we believe Professor Janabi’s proven track record in national and international health management positions makes him exceptionally suited to lead the WHO Regional Office for Africa,” said Minister Mhagama.

The announcement was received with strong support from both government officials and health sector stakeholders, who praised Professor Janabi's leadership and dedication to improving public health systems across Africa.

With a career spanning several decades, Professor Janabi has become one of Tanzania’s most respected public health figures, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in healthcare delivery and policy.
