Vice President Mpango to Launch Uhuru Torch Race in Kibaha

KIBAHA, TANZANIA – March 29, 2025 – Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango will officiate the launch of the 2025 National Uhuru Torch race, scheduled to take place on April 2 at the Kibaha Education Centre in Kibaha town, located in the Coast Region.

The official confirmation was made by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Employment, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Ridhiwani Kikwete, during a press briefing following an on-site inspection of the venue.

“We have confirmed that our Vice President, Dr. Mpango, will be the guest of honour at this important national event,” Mr. Kikwete announced. “Following the launch, the Vice President will ceremoniously hand over the Uhuru Torch to the designated race leaders for this year.”

The leaders entrusted with this symbolic role hail from both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Their mission will be to ensure the torch reaches all 31 regions across the United Republic, covering 195 councils in a span of 195 days.

In addition to celebrating national unity, this year’s Uhuru Torch race carries a civic message. Mr. Kikwete emphasized that the campaign will be instrumental in encouraging citizens to actively participate in the upcoming General Election later this year, highlighting the importance of exercising democratic and constitutional rights.

“The race leaders will also deliver key messages focused on fostering peace and national unity,” he said. “Along the route, various development projects will be visited, evaluated, and launched in each of the 195 councils.”

Coast Regional Commissioner Mr. Abubakar Kunenge affirmed that preparations are well underway in all nine councils within the region: Kibaha Town, Bagamoyo, Kibiti, Mkuranga, Kisarawe, Kibaha District, Rufiji, Mafia, and Chalinze.

The Uhuru Torch—renowned as a symbol of freedom, hope, and unity—remains a cornerstone of Tanzania’s national identity, illuminating milestones in social and economic development as it traverses the nation.
