About Company

The Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC) is an independent, non-partisan media development organization based in Gulu, Uganda. Established in 1997 by journalists and media professionals, NUMEC was conceived to revitalize the media landscape in northern Uganda, a region that endured over two decades of conflict instigated by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Its mission is to integrate media and communications into the strategic objectives of development actors, thereby promoting peace, recovery, reconciliation, and access to information in the region .

Core Programs and Initiatives

NUMEC operates a media resource center that offers a range of services, including:

  • Advocacy: Promoting press freedom and access to information.

  • Capacity Building: Providing training for journalists, government officials, and civil society on media convergence, pluralism, and press freedom.

  • Journalism Grants: Supporting investigative reporting on critical issues such as climate change, energy, and public health .

The organization has also been involved in collaborative projects, such as producing radio series in English and Luo that explore the impact of climate change on smallholder farmers in northern Uganda. These initiatives aim to raise awareness and provide practical solutions for communities affected by environmental challenges .

Membership and Community Engagement

NUMEC is a membership-based organization open to:

  • Practicing journalists (affiliated, freelance, or citizen journalists).

  • Media and communications students, researchers, scholars, or professionals.

Members benefit from reporting grants, access to the media resource center, capacity-building training, legal protection, mentorship, media fellowships, and participation in press conferences and advocacy platforms .
