About Company

Malteser International is the humanitarian relief agency of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a Catholic lay religious order. Established in 2005, it evolved from the foreign aid service of Malteser Germany, which was founded in 1953. The organization is headquartered in Cologne, Germany, with a regional office in New York City, and operates over 100 projects annually across more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.

Malteser International has been actively engaged in Uganda, implementing a range of humanitarian and development projects aimed at improving health services, supporting refugees, promoting environmental sustainability, and enhancing education and vocational training.

🏥 Health and Emergency Medical Services

To address the critical need for emergency medical care, Malteser International has been working to enhance emergency medical services (EMS) in Uganda. This includes establishing legal frameworks, developing standardized training programs, and setting up operational call and dispatch centers. Collaborations with the Ministry of Health and local institutions aim to improve the capacity and deployment of qualified EMS personnel, ensuring timely and effective response to emergencies such as road traffic accidents and medical crises .

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Malteser International supported the establishment of an isolation ward at Lubaga Hospital in Kampala and provided training for hospital staff in emergency care and initial assessment to better prepare for and respond to the outbreak .

🧼 Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)

Malteser International is implementing a cross-regional WASH program in Uganda, focusing on strengthening water and sanitation systems. This initiative aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities, thereby reducing the prevalence of waterborne diseases and enhancing overall public health .

🌳 Environmental Sustainability and Livelihoods

In partnership with the Impact Building Solutions Foundation (IBSF), Malteser International is promoting eco-friendly construction in Uganda. By utilizing strawboard panels made from compressed rice straw, this initiative not only provides sustainable building materials but also creates job opportunities for refugees and local youth. The project supports environmental conservation by reducing deforestation and promoting a circular economy .

Additionally, Malteser International is undertaking reforestation efforts, planting trees to combat environmental degradation and provide vocational prospects for young people in nursery gardens, equipping them with tools and training for sustainable livelihoods .

🎓 Education and Vocational Training

To empower refugees and host communities, Malteser International, in collaboration with Kulika Uganda, launched the Creative Capacity Building project in the Rhino and Imvepi refugee settlements. This initiative focuses on providing vocational training and fostering innovation among youth, enabling them to develop practical skills for self-reliance .

Furthermore, the organization supports educational institutions like St. Jude Omugo Technical School, offering both formal and informal courses to Ugandan nationals and South Sudanese refugees. These programs aim to enhance labor market integration and provide accessible education to marginalized communities .

👩‍👧 Support for Mothers and Children with Disabilities

Since 2016, Malteser International has been supporting the Suubi Lyaffe maternity initiative in Kampala, a self-help center for mothers with disabled children. The center provides free physiotherapy, medication, and psychosocial support, creating a safe environment for children with disabilities and their mothers to recover and develop
