Bududa District Local Government

Bududa District Local Government administers Bududa District, situated in the Eastern Region of Uganda on the southwestern slopes of Mount Elgon. Established in 2006 after being carved out of Manafwa District , Bududa encompasses an area of approximately 250.8 square kilometers and had a population of 210,173 according to the 2014 census .

Administrative Structure

The district’s administrative framework comprises two counties, 18 sub-counties, 96 parishes, and 955 villages . Bududa Town Council serves as the district headquarters and is the largest urban center in the area. The local government operates through both political and technical wings. The political leadership includes the District Chairperson and a council of elected representatives, while the technical wing is headed by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), who oversees the implementation of government policies and programs.

Economic Activities

Agriculture is the backbone of Bududa’s economy, benefiting from the region’s fertile volcanic soils and abundant rainfall. Key crops include coffee, bananas, beans, and various vegetables . Livestock farming, particularly dairy production, also contributes to the local economy.

Infrastructure and Services

The district has made strides in improving infrastructure and public services. In 2024, the government commissioned a new health facility, Bumusi Health Center III, in Nalwanza Sub County, enhancing access to medical services for residents . Additionally, the construction of the 9.6 km Bududa–Busano road commenced in 2024, aiming to improve transportation and connectivity within the district .

Challenges

Bududa District faces significant challenges due to its mountainous terrain and high population density, which make it prone to natural disasters such as landslides. Notably, in 2018, the district experienced devastating mudslides in Bukalasi Sub County, resulting in loss of life and property . Efforts are ongoing to mitigate such risks through disaster preparedness and community sensitization programs.
