FNB Ghana was granted a universal banking license in 2015 and opened its first branch in Accra the same year.

In 2020, to meet new capital requirements set by the Bank of Ghana, it acquired Ghana Home Loan Bank (GHL Bank).

The merger was approved by regulators in Ghana and South Africa, with integration completed in mid-2020.
