Limpopo Agriculture Opens 18 Animal Health Technician Posts Across Five Districts

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has opened applications for 18 Animal Health Technician posts, creating a significant employment opportunity for qualified animal health professionals in the province.

The posts are spread across Capricorn, Mopani, Vhembe, Waterberg, and Sekhukhune districts, with successful candidates expected to support animal disease control, regulatory services, veterinary field work, farmer support, and public-sector animal health programmes.

Applications close on 29 May 2026, and the positions carry a salary of R397 116 per annum at Level 08.

Why These Posts Matter

Animal Health Technicians play a practical frontline role in protecting livestock, supporting farmers, and strengthening public veterinary services. In rural and farming communities, their work is closely linked to food security, livestock productivity, disease surveillance, and compliance with animal health legislation.

For Limpopo, a province with strong agricultural activity and large rural communities, the recruitment of 18 technicians signals a continued need for skilled personnel who can assist with disease control programmes, sample collection, animal identification, enforcement support, farmer education, and reporting.

These are not purely office-based posts. The work involves field engagement, technical knowledge, regulatory understanding, and close cooperation with State Veterinarians.

Who Should Apply?

The vacancies are aimed at candidates who already have the required animal health training and professional registration.

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12
  • Appropriate qualification at NQF Level 6 in Animal Health or equivalent qualification recognised by SAQA
  • Current registration with the South African Veterinary Council as an Animal Health Technician
  • Valid driver’s licence, except for persons with disabilities

The requirement for registration with the South African Veterinary Council is especially important because Animal Health Technicians operate within a regulated professional environment. Their work affects animal disease control, public health, farmer compliance, and the credibility of veterinary support services.

Skills and Knowledge Needed

The department is looking for candidates with strong technical and workplace skills. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, negotiation skills, time management ability, computer literacy, and report writing skills.

The role also requires knowledge of several laws and public-sector frameworks, including:

  • Animal Diseases Act, 1984 (Act 35 of 1984)
  • Animal Identification Act, 2002 (Act 6 of 2002)
  • Meat Safety Act, 2000 (Act 40 of 2000)
  • Disease control programmes and eradication schemes
  • PFMA

This combination of legal, technical, and administrative knowledge shows that the job goes beyond routine animal care. It involves regulatory support, compliance monitoring, data management, and structured reporting.

What Successful Candidates Will Do

Successful applicants will be expected to render Animal Health Regulatory Support Services and help implement disease control measures across their assigned districts.

Their duties include supporting State Veterinarians, assisting with animal health extension services, collecting samples, assisting with law enforcement, populating databases, and compiling monthly and quarterly reports.

In practical terms, this means technicians may work directly with livestock owners, farming communities, veterinary teams, and regulatory systems. They may also help monitor disease risks, support eradication schemes, and ensure that animal health information is properly recorded.

How the Application Process Works

The application process allows for both online and manual applications.

Online applicants must complete all mandatory fields on the e-Recruitment system, submit applications before the closing date, and ensure that all information is accurate and complete.

Manual applicants must submit:

  • A fully completed and signed new Z83 form
  • An updated comprehensive CV

Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified copies of qualifications and ID documents.

This means applicants should focus on submitting a complete, accurate, and properly signed application at the first stage. Missing information, incomplete forms, or late submissions can affect eligibility.
