Mark Feehily’s Long Road Back: Inside the Westlife Star’s Health Battle and His Future With the Band
For more than two decades, Mark Feehily has been one of the defining voices behind Westlife’s success. Known for his powerful ballads, emotional delivery, and unmistakable vocal range, Feehily helped transform the Irish pop group into one of the most successful boy bands of the modern era.
But as Westlife celebrates its 25th anniversary with a new single, a greatest hits album, and a major world tour, Feehily’s absence has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the band’s comeback.
While Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, and Kian Egan continue promoting the anniversary celebrations, fans have been left wondering when — or if — Feehily will return to the stage after years of severe health complications.
The singer’s journey over the past several years has been marked by emergency surgeries, intensive care treatment, pneumonia, and a prolonged recovery that has dramatically reshaped his role within the group.

Westlife’s 25th Anniversary Comes With One Major Absence
Westlife recently appeared on Britain’s Got Talent to promote their latest projects, but many fans immediately noticed that Feehily was missing from the lineup.
The group is currently operating as a trio during live performances, though members have repeatedly stressed that Feehily remains an important part of Westlife.
Even in his absence, his vocals continue to feature prominently on new material, including the track Your Love Amazes Me and previous releases such as Chariot.
Speaking about Feehily’s role in the group, Shane Filan explained:
“He’s unable to join the tour unfortunately as he’s mentioned already but being on the new song is very important. He’s still a member of this band obviously and he’s sounding great on the new songs.”
The anniversary tour represents a major milestone for the band, which first rose to fame in the late 1990s before becoming one of the most commercially successful pop acts in Europe.
Originally featuring Brian McFadden alongside Filan, Byrne, Egan, and Feehily, Westlife achieved massive international success through hits such as Flying Without Wings, Swear It Again, and Uptown Girl.
McFadden left the band in 2004 to pursue a solo career, and since then Westlife has continued as a four-member group.
Now, more than twenty years later, the band faces another difficult transition — this time caused by Feehily’s health challenges rather than a formal departure.
The Health Crisis That Changed Everything
Feehily first publicly detailed his medical struggles in an emotional statement shared with fans in 2024.
According to the singer, the ordeal began in August 2020 following what was initially described as a routine surgical procedure.
Within days, complications escalated dramatically.
Feehily explained that he was rushed to A&E after experiencing severe pain and was later informed that he had developed sepsis — a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to infection.
He recalled the terrifying moment he learned emergency surgery was required to save his life.
“I eventually ended that awful day in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) where I was informed that due to a complication with the surgery, I had developed severe ‘Sepsis’, a life-threatening infection that would require immediate emergency surgery to rectify the problem and basically save my life.”
The recovery process proved exceptionally difficult.
Because the crisis occurred during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, Feehily spent months in hospital without visitors, including his fiancée and young daughter.
The singer described the period as both physically and mentally traumatic.
“It was physically and mentally a very difficult time, not to mention traumatic having to spend so long in ICU.”
Pneumonia, More Surgery, and Continuing Complications
Unfortunately, the sepsis diagnosis marked only the beginning of a prolonged series of medical setbacks.
In late 2021, Feehily became seriously ill again while in Newcastle ahead of a concert performance.
He was later diagnosed with pneumonia and forced to withdraw from several tour dates while recovering.
The complications continued into 2022 when doctors informed him that additional surgery would be necessary.
The procedures forced him to miss portions of Westlife’s Wild Dreams tour.
Despite attempting to return to performing, Feehily admitted the physical demands of touring eventually became overwhelming.
The singer later developed what he described as a “very large incisional hernia,” requiring yet another major operation.
By that stage, he had undergone four major surgeries in total.
“Three months after that surgery, I tried my best to soldier on for you guys and to go back on tour but unfortunately the physical demands of the concerts and extensive travel were proving too much for me.”
Stepping Away From Touring
In 2024, Feehily officially announced that he would temporarily step away from Westlife touring commitments.
The announcement came just before the group’s first-ever American tour and marked one of the most emotional moments in the band’s recent history.
In his statement, Feehily emphasized that the decision had not been made lightly.
“It is with the upmost level of regret that I must now temporarily stand down from all Westlife touring until a time that I have had the chance to fully recover from the turbulent journey I have been through as an individual.”
The announcement sparked an outpouring of support from fans around the world, many of whom praised the singer for prioritizing his health after years of trying to continue performing despite ongoing complications.
Westlife’s Emotional Response
The remaining members of Westlife have consistently supported Feehily throughout his recovery.
Kian Egan acknowledged how difficult the situation has been for both the band and fans.
“We’re devastated he won’t be joining us on this tour. We’ll be missing him every night just as much as the fans will. But he’s given us his full support.”
Nicky Byrne also recently addressed speculation surrounding Feehily’s return, stressing that recovery remains the priority.
“He’s still recovering both mentally and physically and you just have to give him his time, and we are.”
Despite the uncertainty, Byrne reassured supporters that the group remains hopeful Feehily will eventually return to the stage.
What About Brian McFadden?
At the same time, speculation has resurfaced about whether former member Brian McFadden could rejoin the band during Feehily’s absence.
However, current members have largely dismissed the idea — at least for now.
Speaking about the possibility, Shane Filan said:
“We’ve been together as four now since 2004 — that’s 22 years. You can never say never, but that would be way down the road if we’d ever consider that.”
The comments suggest Westlife remains committed to its current identity and continues to view Feehily as an active member despite his temporary hiatus from live performances.
Why Mark Feehily’s Absence Feels Different
Pop groups often evolve over time, but Feehily’s absence carries unique emotional weight for longtime fans.
Unlike previous lineup changes driven by career decisions or creative differences, Feehily’s situation is deeply connected to serious health concerns and personal recovery.
For many listeners, his voice has always represented the emotional core of Westlife’s sound.
Tracks such as Flying Without Wings, You Raise Me Up, and Queen of My Heart became synonymous with his soaring vocals and emotional performances.
That legacy explains why fans continue to remain hopeful about his eventual comeback.
Even though he is not currently touring, the continued inclusion of his vocals on new music signals that neither the band nor Feehily himself sees this as a permanent farewell.
A Future Still Unwritten
Westlife’s anniversary celebrations are ultimately serving two parallel narratives.
On one hand, the band is celebrating an extraordinary 25-year career filled with chart success, sold-out tours, and enduring fan loyalty.
On the other, the group is navigating one of the most difficult chapters in its history as one of its defining members continues a long recovery journey.
For now, Feehily remains away from the stage while focusing on his health.
But both the singer and his bandmates have repeatedly emphasized one important point: he is still part of Westlife.
Whether he returns in the near future or much later, fans continue to hold onto the possibility of seeing all four members reunited once again.
