He claimed national high school marks for pass completions, passing yardage, touchdown passes, and passing percentage for a season.  His athletic gifts weren’t limited to the gridiron — Couch also starred on the high school basketball team, once averaging 36 points per game as a junior. 

That high school dominance earned him Kentucky’s “Mr. Football” award in 1995. When he committed to the Kentucky Wildcats, few could have imagined just how explosive his college career would be.

From Kentucky Stardom to #1 Draft Pick

At Kentucky, Couch thrived — especially after a freshman year spent splitting time as quarterback. With a shift in coaching and the implementation of a pass-heavy “Air Raid” offense under coaches Hal Mumme and Mike Leach, he found the system tailored for his strengths. 

In 1998, he exploded onto the national scene: completing 400 passes for 4,275 yards and 36 touchdowns, setting what was then a Southeastern Conference single-season passing record. That season earned him consensus First-Team All-American honors and SEC Player of the Year recognition.  He also placed fourth in Heisman Trophy voting — a testament to his prominence in college football spotlight. 

Not surprisingly, when the 1999 NFL Draft rolled around, Couch was selected first overall by the Cleveland Browns. In doing so, he became the first pick for the Browns after their reactivation as an expansion team. 

The NFL Reality — Triumphs, Trials, and Injuries

Entering the NFL, expectations for Couch were sky-high. Early flashes suggested he could deliver. But over five seasons in Cleveland (1999–2003), his career was marred by inconsistency and a string of serious injuries.

His statistical legacy — 11,131 passing yards, 64 touchdowns to 67 interceptions, and a 59.8% completion rate — tells the story of a career that didn’t quite live up to its early promise. The 2002 season stood out: Couch threw for 2,842 yards and 18 touchdowns, leading the Browns to a 9–7 record and a playoff berth — their first since the franchise’s return. 

But misfortune struck in the final game of the season: a broken leg would derail his momentum and trigger a decline from which he never fully recovered. 

Couch attempted brief comebacks — including stints with the Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars — but neither led to a return to regular-season action.

As years passed, many came to view Couch as one of the NFL’s more notable draft disappointments — a “bust,” given the gap between his draft status and pro output. 

Reinvention Off the Field: Broadcasting, Business, Legacy

For Couch, the end of his playing career didn’t mark the end of his association with football. He pivoted to broadcasting and business — finding ways to stay connected to the sport and build a life after the helmet.

He spent time as an analyst for networks including Fox Sports South and the SEC Regional Network, where his insight as a former quarterback offered authenticity. 

Beyond media, Couch has also ventured into financial services. Together with his older brother Greg, he became part owner of Meridian Wealth Management — a nationwide firm based out of Lexington, Kentucky. 

In a symbolic moment of closure and recognition, Couch was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2024 — affirming just how dominant and transformative his college years were. 

Reflecting on his induction, he described it as “a dream come true,” a validation not just of his stats on the field, but of the belief, perseverance, and identity tied to the game.

He was previously married to Heather Kozar, a former Playboy model.  He is also a father; his son, Chase Couch, reportedly received a verbal scholarship offer from Kentucky in January 2023, continuing the family’s ties to the sport.
