Introduction

The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) is a prestigious institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and community development. The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) was established by Act No. 8 of 1999 of the Zanzibar House of Representatives which was then amended by Act No. 11 of 2009, and further re-amended by Act No. 7 of 2016. The latter amendment has justified SUZA to merge with other Zanzibar higher learning institutions; these are the then Zanzibar Institute of Financial Administration (ZIFA), College of Health Sciences (CHS) and the Zanzibar Institute of Tourism Development (ZIToD). His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council is the Chancellor of the University. The University became operational in September 2001.

SUZA Admission

Currently, SUZA consists of seven campuses that are found at equally beautiful but different locations within the islands. Six campuses are located in Unguja and one campus in Pemba Island. Tunguu is the main SUZA campus located about 12 km away from Zanzibar town. The campus is actually huge and brand new decorated with green field that offers cutting-edge infrastructure of the World standard. It gives to students a local alternative to some of the world’s attractive learning environments.
The second campus is inherited from the first Teachers’ Training College in East Africa, Nkrumah campus at Beit el Ras. This is located along the coast of the Indian Ocean 5 kilometres away from the Stone Town; Nkrumah is a unique and unparalleled campus in the region that is constantly and naturally decorated by glittering blue sea and white sand beach along the perimeter of the campus. Here, our students enjoy very enriching learning environment along with the sea breezes.

Vuga as the third campus is located in the heart of the famous and historic Stone Town. Zanzibar is proud of this campus and it is very magnificently conserved by UNESCO World heritage site that vividly manifests rich culture and history of Zanzibar and its people. Thus, Vuga campus is composed of old but well kept historic structures that are surrounded by social amenities and public offices.

Benjamini Mkapa as the fourth Campus is located in Mchangamdogo at Pemba Island. This campus is inherited from the Benjamin Mkapa Teachers’ Training College. The fifth Campus is Maruhubi which is situated along the Indian Ocean sea shore 4 kilometres away from the town centre, and 14 kilomeres away from Zanzibar airport. To reach public and private transport is readily available at a reasonable cost.

Chwaka is the sixth Campus located at Chwaka village; scenic fishing village in Central District 30 kilometres away from Zanzibar town. The seventh Campus is inherited from the then College of Health Sciences at Mbweni. More new campuses that will house new schools are expected to be built in the next five years in accordance with the university strategic plan. These will be located in both, Unguja and the sister island of Pemba.

ADMISSION REGULATIONS

The State University of Zanzibar strongly believes in equal opportunities on the basis of merits in admissions. The University places importance on the applicant’s potential to achieve academic success in the chosen programme of study. Hence selection is based on the applicant’s previous academic record and relevant character traits.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

SUZA adheres to the application process in accordance with the harmonised academic calendar issued by TCU and directives of the SENATE. The basic procedures in the application process include the following guidelines:

  • A person who wishes to join the University shall apply for admission to the Vice Chancellor.
  • The application shall be made by filling University Online Application Form, which shall be made available on the University website (www.suza.ac.tz) or any other places in any manner as may be pronounced by the University from time to time.
  • Default icon list textThe form shall be received online by the Directorate of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and Directorate of Graduate Studies, Research and Consultancy (DGSRC) for postgraduate application.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR POST-GRADUATE STUDIES

This will include Masters Programme and Doctors Programme

Doctor of Philosophy Programme

Applicants who want to join for doctorate programme should be the graduate of a master’s degree (UQF level 9) in a relevant discipline/area or equivalent with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or B grade.

The specific entry requirement outlined in the curriculum shall be considered in admitting any applicants for the PhD Programme without violating the minimum requirement set by the TCU.

Masters Programme

A University shall admit into a master’s degree programme (all types) an applicant who has:

a) a relevant academic bachelor’s degree (UQF level 8) or equivalent with GPA of 2.7 or B grade; OR

b) a postgraduate diploma in a relevant discipline/area or equivalent with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or B grade; OR

c) a professional training qualification with additional relevant training, evidence of research capability and relevant working experience.

However, the specific entry requirement outlined in the curriculum shall be considered in admitting any applicants for the master’s programme without violating the minimum requirements set by the TCU.

 

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

This will include Degrees (Bachelors) Programme, Certificate programmes and Diploma Programmes

  • Entry Requirements for Bachelor Degree ProgrammeA candidate shall be eligible for consideration for admission to a degree programme of The State University of Zanzibar if the candidate has the following qualifications:

DIRECT APPLICANTS (FROM FORM SIX)

Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) with two principal passes with a total of 4.0 points in two Subjects (except for health- related programmes)

FOR ALL APPLICANTS COMPLETED ACSEE BEFORE 2014 AND FROM 2016 ONWARDS

 A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5 and F = 0 point
 The minimum principal pass in this case, is an ‘E’ grade.

FOR APPLICANTS WHO COMPLETED ACSEE IN 2014 AND 2015

 A = 5; B+ = 4; B = 3; C = 2; D = 1; E = 0.5 and F = 0 point.
 The minimum principal pass in this case, is a ‘D’ grade.

For health-related programmes, the applicant must have 6 points from three subjects as described below:

FOR MEDICAL DOCTOR AND DENTAL SURGERY PROGRAMMES

For Medical Doctor and Dental Surgery Programmes, the applicant must have a minimum of D grade in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

FOR BACHELOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

For Bachelor of Environmental Health, the applicant must have a minimum of C in Chemistry, D in Biology and E in Geography, Physics, Mathematics or Nutrition.

EQUIVALENT APPLICANTS (FROM DIPLOMA/EQUIVALENT)

An appropriate equivalent Diploma of a GPA not less than 3.0 with four passes at the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) with no religious subjects. For health programmes, the applicant must have five passes at CSEE with no religious subjects

  • Minimum Entry Requirements for Diploma ProgrammesA candidate shall be eligible for consideration for admission to a diploma programme of The State University of Zanzibar if the candidate has the following qualifications:

APPLICANT FROM FORM SIX LEVEL (ACSEE)

Applicant from form six level (ACSEE) must have a minimum of One principal pass and One subsidiary from the principal subject

A CERTIFICATE FROM A LEARNING INSTITUTION

A certificate from a recognized higher learning institution with four passes at CSEE. For this qualification, the applicant can apply for the two-year diploma programmes (except for health-related programmes)

APPLICANTS FROM FORM FOUR (CSEE)

Applicants from form four (CSEE) must have a minimum of Four (4) passes (minimum “D”). With this qualification, one can apply for a three-year diploma only.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES

For certificate applicants, one must have a minimum of four passes (minimum “D”) at the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE).

REGISTRATION PROVISIONS

  • The student shall be registered online within the first two weeks of each semester by the Directorate of Undergraduate Studies.
  • The student shall not attend lectures or studies when he or she has not registered with the University.
  • The registered student, who has paid all the prescribed fees required by the University, shall be eligible to sit for university examination in a particular Programme
  • Late registration by any student shall be penalized by extra charges determined by the council or unless otherwise stated in these Regulations.
  • Late registration means registration processes made by the student after elapse of the first two weeks of every semester.
  • The student may register for optional courses provided by the department in the subsequent semester two weeks before the end of the operating semester.
  • Every student must be assigned to a specific Academic Advisor immediately after registration.

CHANGE OF NAME

  • The student in the course of study at the University shall use the names that appear on the birth certificate.
  • Where it appears that the names on the Birth Certificate are different from that on Certificate of Secondary Education, the University shall have the right to use the names that appear on the Certificate of Secondary Education.
  • A change of names by the student shall not be entertained during study at the University unless for the names appearing in the affidavit or deed pool from the Magistrate or Commissioner for oath or notary public.

POSTPONEMENT OF STUDIES AND STUDENTS TRANSFER

  • The student may be allowed to postpone studies for reasons of proven continued ill health supported by a doctor’s medical certificate, financial problems, or for any other reason that, in the opinion of the Senate, is strong enough to prevent the student from pursuing studies effectively.
  • The postponement approved by the Senate shall be for a semester or an academic year, as the case may be.
  • The maximum period for the student to postpone studies is two academic years except that upon the expiry of the first academic year; the student shall seek a second postponement afresh.
  • The student requesting for postponement shall carry over and re-sit or supplement all subjects he is entitled to carry over and re-sit or supplement.
  • The student may transfer from one faculty or Programme of study to another University provided that:
  • The former Programmes of study look similar and compatible;
  • Grading and assessment criteria of the Programmes are compatible and accepted by the Senate;
  • Expenses paid to the University by the student for the former Programme are the same as the requested programme.

RESUMING THE STUDY

Any registered students who want to resume study after being postponed shall write the letter to Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Research and Consultancy not more than two weeks after the commencement of the new academic semester in the respective academic year he/she wants to resume

REGISTRATION OF FOREIGN STUDENTS

  1. Foreign students shall observe and comply with the immigration regulations and other related laws of the land.

  2. A Foreign student shall not be allowed to enter class for studies at the University unless student visa or resident permit is acquired.
  3. Foreign students shall pay fees as determined by the University Authority
  4. Foreign applicants who come from a country where the medium of instruction is not English shall submit proof of English Proficiency.
  5. Foreign students who come to study Kiswahili programmes shall have to sit for a Kiswahili proficiency test or undergo a one-year special Kiswahili language course offered by the University.

STUDENT IDENTITY CARDS

  • All registered students shall be issued identity cards to enable them to access university facilities.
  • The identity card is not transferable and any fraudulent use may lead to the loss of student privileges.
  • Loss of the identity card should be reported immediately to the Dean of Students, and a new ID card will be issued on payment of the replacement fee.
  • After completing their studies students are required to surrender their identity cards to the Dean of students during the process of filling clearance form
  • The medium of instruction in this University is English, except for foreign languages and Kiswahili.
