Stu Cook was born Stuart Alden Cook on April 25, 1945, in Oakland, California. From early on, Cook’s musical instincts pointed him toward rhythm — he began playing piano before gravitating to bass guitar, driven by a fascination for deep, resonant grooves that would later define his signature sound.

Growing up in nearby El Cerrito, Cook attended high school with childhood friends including John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, and Doug Clifford — friendships that would soon become the foundation for rock history. Cook and Clifford later attended San Jose State University, where their collaboration picked up alongside their friends’ musical ambitions.

From Humble Band to Rock Legends

What began as a small high-school band evolved over the 1960s into Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), with Cook firmly at the rhythm core.  As CCR erupted onto the global rock scene, Cook’s bass lines — steady, gritty, and soulful — became the backbone of songs that would become timeless anthems. Hits like “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” and “Fortunate Son” carried his pulse.

In 1995, Cook and Clifford resurrected the CCR spirit with Creedence Clearwater Revisited — a band dedicated to keeping the original CCR catalog alive through live performance for new generations.

Second: ongoing performances and royalties from his later projects. And third: prudent investment of his earnings, including real estate. For instance, in 2025 he reportedly listed a modernist waterfront mansion in Sarasota, Florida — a property once owned and rebuilt after a fire — for nearly US$10 million.
