Not long after, his life derailed further. On New Year’s Day 2006, authorities searched for him in connection with alleged armed robberies outside a Columbus club. He turned himself in the next day.  Indictments followed, and within months, a separate high-speed chase and weapons charges complicated his legal battles. 

In September 2006, Clarett accepted a plea agreement, admitting guilt to aggravated robbery and weapons charges; he was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison — with the possibility of early release after 3.5 years.

While incarcerated, Clarett underwent a profound transformation. He enrolled in distance-learning courses at Ohio University, studying geriatrics and gerontology, committed to education and self-improvement even behind bars.

Upon his early release in April 2010, Clarett began to rebuild purposefully. He played briefly with the Omaha Nighthawks in the now-defunct United Football League, marking the first professional game of his life — nearly a decade after his college stardom.
