About the Job

Organization Background:

JSI is a US-based public health nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality technical and managerial assistance programs throughout the world. In Ethiopia, JSI has been working to improve health outcomes for more than 30 years, implementing more than 60 projects and working in every region. JSI is currently implementing the Data Use Partnership 2.0 (DUP) Workstream I project, which provides technical assistance to the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MOH) and Regional Health Bureau s (RHBs). DUP aims to strengthen the national Health Information System (HIS) and the broader digital health ecosystem, focusing on enhancing capacity, fostering a culture of data use, improving digital health systems and services, strengthening governance, and enhanced gender intentionality in HIS/DH.

As Ethiopia’s digital health landscape rapidly expands, there is a critical need to cultivate a new generation of professionals skilled in data science. This internship program is designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application in the public health sector. It offers a unique opportunity for a recent graduate to develop cutting-edge data science skills while contributing to meaningful health outcomes. This initiative is part of JSI’s commitment to building local capacity and promoting gender equality within the technology and data sectors in Ethiopia.

Purpose and Objectives of the Internship:

The primary purpose of this internship is to provide a structured, hands-on learning experience for a recent female graduate to develop practical data science skills within the context of Ethiopia’s health system. The intern will gain invaluable experience by working with real-world health data and seasoned professionals, effectively shortening their learning curve and preparing them for a successful career in health data analytics. By the end of the internship, the intern will:

  • Gain a deep understanding of Ethiopia’s digital health ecosystem and its primary data sources.

  • Develop technical proficiency in data extraction, cleaning, analysis, visualization and insight generation using data science tools and techniques.

  • Enhance their professional skills, including communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.

  • Contribute to JSI and MOH’s efforts to transform health data into actionable insights for improved decision-making.

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Deputy Project Director and Digital Health Lead, the intern will:

  • Data Management: Prepare data for analysis by accessing, cleaning, and validating information from diverse national health systems, including DHIS2, eCHIS, and EMR.

  • Data Analysis: Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify trends and patterns. Assist in applying statistical and basic machine learning models to address key health challenges like service equity and disease surveillance.

  • Insight Communication: Develop clear data visualizations (dashboards, maps) and help create reports and presentations to share findings with JSI and the Ministry of Health.

  • Capacity Building: Facilitate Data Science Capstone Training workshops and involve in mentorship activities and support Data science trainees to prepare presentations using real MOH data

  • Team Engagement: Collaborate closely with internal and external teams, actively participate in learning opportunities like workshops and technical meetings, and document processes.

  • Support other team objectives as assigned.

Working Relationship:

The intern will work as a member of the JSI/DUP’s Data Use team. They will receive regular guidance, mentorship, and feedback from their direct supervisor and other senior staff. The intern is expected to participate actively in all relevant team meetings and discussions, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Deliverables:

Throughout the 9-month internship, the intern will be responsible for producing a portfolio of work that demonstrates their skills and contributions. Key deliverables include:

  • Completed Data Analysis Projects: A minimum of two analytical projects that explore specific public health questions. Each project will culminate in a presentation or a brief report detailing the methodology, findings, and insights gained from the data.

  • Functional Data Visualizations: A set of clear and impactful data visualizations or an interactive dashboard prototype (e.g., in Power BI, R Shiny, etc.) designed to communicate complex health trends to stakeholders.

  • Reusable Code Repository: A well-documented collection of code scripts (in Python or R) for key tasks such as data cleaning, processing, and analysis, which can be used by the JSI team for future work.

  • Data Quality Report: At least one comprehensive data quality assessment report for a key health dataset, identifying data integrity issues and providing actionable recommendations for improvement.

  • Capstone Presentation: A final presentation delivered to the JSI team at the end of the internship, summarizing the projects completed, skills learned, key achievements, and overall experience.
