St. John’s Hospital is one of the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) member hospitals owned by the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu under the Mzuzu Diocesan Catholic Health Commission (MDCHC). In its efforts of ensuring efficiency in the provision of good quality health services, the Hospital would like to fill the position of Orthopedic Therapist (Grade J) which currently exists within its staffing establishment.

Requirements

  • Diploma in Clinical medicine (Orthopedic), or equivalent recognized qualification
  • Should be registered with Medical Council of Malawi
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience at Orthopedic Therapist (Grade K)

Duties and responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Medical Officer, the Orthopedic Therapist will be expected to:

  • Screen and triage patients requiring orthopedic services
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage patients with musculoskeletal conditions, injuries, and deformities.
  • Provide outpatient and inpatient care for patients with orthopedic needs.
  • Perform minor and major orthopedic procedures within scope of practice.
  • Manage fractures and dislocations including; reduction, immobilization, traction, application of plaster casts, splints, braces and other procedures.
  • Assist in surgical operations (orthopedic and trauma surgeries) and perform designated procedures independently within the scope of practice.
  • Prescribe appropriate medications, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation services for orthopedic patients.
  • Monitor and follow up on patients’ recovery and treatment outcomes.
  • Provide emergency care to trauma patients with fractures, crush injuries, spinal injuries, burns, amputations and other relevant traumas.
  • Participate in accident and emergency duty for timely orthopedic interventions.
  • Stabilize and refer patients requiring advanced orthopedic or neurosurgical care.
  • Provide counseling and education to patients and families on care, rehabilitation, and prevention of complications.
  • Mentor and train junior clinicians, interns, students, and nurses in orthopedic and trauma care.
  • Participate in continuous professional development activities.
  • Contribute to clinical audits, research, and quality improvement initiatives in orthopedic services.
  • Ensure infection prevention and control practices in all orthopedic procedures.
  • Manage orthopedic equipment and supplies, and ensure proper use of plaster room, theater, and rehabilitation facilities.
  • Record patient’s data in relevant registers.
  • Aggregating, analyzing and interpretation of patient data.
  • Disseminating information to all relevant stakeholders including submission of weekly reports to the designated officer.
