Born Frederick George Lays on August 22, 1970 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada, the man known to millions as George Canyon spent his early years in Fox Brook, a small community in Pictou County. 

Growing up in a modest family — his father worked as a coal miner and his mother was a homemaker.Life would throw an early challenge at him: at age 14, George was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes, a diagnosis that threatened not only his health but also his early ambition to become a pilot cadet. 

Despite the setback, he never lost his reverence for the skies: later in life, after establishing his music career, George Canyon went on to earn a private pilot license — a testament to his resilience and refusal to let diabetes define his limits.

When a Family’s Faith Rekindles a Dream

For many years, music took a backseat. With a young family to support — a wife, Jennifer Canyon, and their two children (often named in media as Kale and Madison) — George worked as a bylaw officer and in other jobs to make ends meet.

Still, Jennifer believed in his talent and encouraged him to try out for the second season of the U.S.-based singing competition Nashville Star in 2004. That decision marked a turning point. On that stage, performing under the name George Canyon, he captured hearts with his voice — ultimately finishing as runner-up. The exposure changed everything.

The aftermath of Nashville Star saw George signed to a record deal. In 2004 he released his breakout album One Good Friend, which resonated widely and earned him a Juno Award for Country Recording of the Year.

His commitment to service extended further: in recognition of his philanthropic efforts and support for Canadian troops, he was appointed Honorary Colonel at 14 Wing Greenwood (a base of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets) — eventually becoming its Colonel Commandant.

George also diversified into acting. He made appearances in popular Canadian television shows like Trailer Park Boys and Heartland, and featured in films such as Dawn Rider and Coming Home for Christmas.
