That estimate sparked outrage from Castro himself. He dismissed the claims as “repugnant slander,” once quipping that if there was proof he had “a single dollar,” he would resign. 

Behind the scenes, some analysts and former insiders have argued that the $900 million figure may have been inflated, suggesting a more modest — though still substantial — fortune near $168 million. This lower estimate came from claims about a private island, a yacht, and other perks chronicled by one of Castro’s former bodyguards. 

The contrast between Castro’s public rhetoric — austerity, egalitarianism, and collective welfare — and the alleged personal comfort has become one of the most enduring contradictions of his life.

Complex Bonds: Marriages, Affairs, and a Large Family

Castro’s personal life was as complex and shadowed as his political journey. While the government never officially designated a “First Lady,” public records and defector testimonies identify two acknowledged marriages and multiple relationships outside them.

• His first marriage was to Mirta Díaz‑Balart in October 1948 — while both were students — producing one son, Fidelito Castro Díaz-Balart (born in 1949). The marriage ended in 1955. 

• During or soon after that union, Castro had a liaison with Cuban socialite Natalia Revuelta Clews, resulting in a daughter, Alina Fernández (born 1956).

• His most significant long-term relationship was with Dalia Soto del Valle, whom he met in 1961. The relationship remained largely secret until 2006. Together they had five sons: Alexis, Alex, Alejandro, Antonio, and Angelito.

• Additional relationships were rumored — including a liaison with a military-intelligence colonel, leading to another child; and other alleged flings producing more children. However, details around these remain murky, reflecting both the secrecy around Castro’s private life and the challenges of verifying claims beyond official sources. 

This tangled web of relationships, children, and secrecy amplified both his mystique and controversies. For decades, the Cuban government carefully curated his public image — while insiders, defectors, and journalists painted a very different, far messier human portrait.

On one hand, he reshaped Cuba — breaking from a U.S.-aligned dictatorship, redistributing land, nationalizing industry, and transforming public services like healthcare and education. On the other, his regime cracked down on dissent, limited political freedom, and presided over decades of economic hardship once Soviet support evaporated. 

His alleged personal wealth — whether $900 million, $168 million, or somewhere in between — remains emblematic of the contradictions at the heart of his political and personal life. The same man who burnished a vision of classless society also faced allegations of extravagant private luxury.
