Born Paul Charles Caravello on July 12, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York, the man who would become Eric Carr began life far from the thunderous stages of rock fame. By the dawn of the 1980s, the legendary rock band KISS was undergoing turmoil. Founding drummer Peter Criss had departed, and KISS embarked on an open audition for his replacement. At that time, Carr was working as a stove repairman for his father — but he seized the opportunity. He submitted a bright, eye-catching application package (with a demo tape of his vocals over a KISS track) and earned a call to audition. 

After a successful audition, Caravello rebranded himself: he chose the stage name “Eric Carr,” with “Eric” drawn from a list provided by his girlfriend, and “Carr” chosen to phonetically mirror Peter Criss in rhythm when listing band members.

Though originally offered the persona “The Hawk,” Carr rejected it — instead choosing “The Fox,” a character whose stage makeup would become iconic. His first public performance as “The Fox” with KISS took place on July 25, 1980, at New York’s Palladium. 

Forging a New Sound — and a Legacy — for KISS

Once part of KISS, Carr quickly proved himself more than a replacement — he became a force. Between 1981 and 1990, he played on seven KISS studio albums, including Music from the Elder, Creatures of the Night, Lick It Up, Animalize, Asylum, Crazy Nights, and Hot in the Shade. 

Carr was not limited to drums: he contributed backing vocals, occasionally sang lead — such as his remake of the ballad Beth — and even wrote songs. His proudest songwriting credit: Little Caesar from 1989’s Hot in the Shade. On that track, he played multiple instruments and delivered lead vocals — a testament to his musical versatility and growing creative role. 

Fans came to appreciate not just his technical skill, but his humility and dedication. While many rock stars were defined by excesses, Carr remained down-to-earth — a Brooklyn kid who still understood the grit behind the glam.

The Fox’s Final Act — Health Struggles and Departure

In early 1991, Carr was diagnosed with a rare, malignant tumor in his heart. He underwent surgery and later chemotherapy when cancer spread to his lungs.

Despite the severity of his condition, Carr insisted on showing his commitment. He pleaded with his bandmates to let him stay involved — especially for the music video of God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II — even though he was frail and often hospitalized.

His last public appearance with KISS occurred during the MTV Video Music Awards in September 1991.

Tragically, on November 24, 1991, Carr died at Bellevue Hospital in New York, succumbing to complications from cancer.
