About Company

Raising The Village (RTV) is a Canadian-registered non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating ultra-poverty in rural Uganda. Established in 2012 by Shawn Cheung, RTV collaborates with last-mile farming communities to implement a holistic, data-driven, and community-led development model.

🌍 Mission & Vision

RTV’s mission is to end ultra-poverty within our generation by increasing household incomes from as low as $0.75/day to over $2/day within 24 months. The organization emphasizes inclusivity, focusing on women, youth, and the most vulnerable households to ensure equitable development.

📈 Program Model: 24-Month Partnership

RTV’s comprehensive approach addresses ultra-poverty through three interconnected pillars:Driving Income: Enhancing agricultural productivity via training in Good Agronomic Practices (GAP), provision of quality seeds and tools, and formation of local cooperatives to boost yields and diversify income sources.

  1. Enabling Participation: Removing barriers to development by improving access to clean water, healthcare, and financial services. This includes establishing Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and delivering financial literacy and gender equity training.

  2. Ensuring Sustainability: Building local capacity through the creation of community leadership structures, training local government workers, and integrating with existing government systems to ensure long-term impact.

After the 24-month program, RTV hands over the project to the community, symbolizing independence and continued growth, while monitoring progress for an additional 36 months.

📊 Impact & Reach

  • Beneficiaries: As of 2024, RTV has reached over 1 million people across 1,306 villages in rural Uganda.

  • Income Growth: Partner households have seen income increases from $1.01 to $2.29 per day within the 24-month program.

  • Return on Investment: A one-time investment of $100 per household has yielded an average cumulative ROI of 541% at 24 months and 1799% at 60 months.

  • Gender & Youth Empowerment: RTV aims for at least 40% of leadership roles to be held by women and 20% by youth in each community.

🧪 Data-Driven Approach

RTV employs advanced data analytics to inform decision-making and optimize interventions. This approach has attracted support from organizations like GiveWell, which funded a five-year follow-up study to assess the long-term impact of RTV’s programs.

🤝 Partnerships & Collaborations

RTV collaborates with various stakeholders, including:

  • Government of Uganda: Partnering through initiatives like the Agriculture Cluster Development Program (ACDP) to support agricultural inputs. Global Affairs Canada: Funding the “From Last Mile Into Possibilities (FLIP)” project, supporting over 100,000 people in Kyenjojo and Kagadi Districts from 2022-2024.

  • Thankyou: Providing unrestricted grants totaling over $838,000 AUD since 2020 to support RTV’s mission.
