The Butabika School of Psychiatric Nursing (BSPN), established in 1960, is Uganda’s premier institution dedicated to training mental health nurses. Situated within Butabika Hospital Village in Nakawa Division, Kampala, the school operates under the Ministry of Health and is affiliated with Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital, the country’s main psychiatric facility.
🎓 Academic Programs
BSPN offers a range of programs tailored to equip students with comprehensive mental health care skills:

Certificate in Mental Health Nursing: Introduced at the school’s inception to train specialized mental health nurses.

Post-Basic Certificate in Mental Health Nursing: Launched in 1968 to enhance the skills of practicing nurses.

Direct Registered Certificate in Mental Health Nursing: Started in 1970 to increase the number of registered mental health nurses capable of leading units and wards.

Diploma Programs: Introduced in 2006 (direct) and 2008 (extension) to advance psychiatric nursing education and facilitate university entry.
The curriculum emphasizes holistic patient care, integrating biological, psychological, social, and cultural aspects of mental health treatment.

Located approximately 9 kilometers east of Kampala’s city center, BSPN benefits from its proximity to Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital. This setting provides students with practical exposure to a wide range of mental health conditions and treatments, enhancing their clinical experience.
🏫 Governance & Faculty
The school is governed by a dedicated council and managed by a team of teaching and non-teaching staff, including 12 departmental heads overseeing various academic and administrative functions. Notably, the school has produced numerous graduates who have gone on to hold significant positions in healthcare and public service sectors.
