The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) is a not-for-profit intergovernmental organization established in 1994. It is owned by the National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) of 15 member states in Eastern and Central Africa (ECA). ASARECA’s overarching mandate is to transform agriculture for improved livelihoods, sustained economic growth, and inclusive development in the ECA region, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mission and Vision

Key Activities

ASARECA focuses on several strategic areas:

  • Agricultural Technologies and Innovation: Promoting the development and dissemination of agricultural technologies to enhance productivity.

  • Policy, Markets, and Trade: Facilitating policy analysis and advocacy to improve market access and trade for agricultural products.

  • Partnerships and Capacity Development: Building partnerships and strengthening capacities of stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

  • Knowledge Management and Communication: Managing and disseminating knowledge to inform decision-making and practices in agriculture.

  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Assessing the impact of agricultural research and development initiatives to inform future strategies.

ASARECA implements various projects under these strategic areas, such as the AICCRA, AIRTEA, CAADP-XP4, and WATDEV projects.

Member Countries

ASARECA comprises 15 member countries: Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Republic of the Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, and Uganda.
