About IRI
The International Republican Institute (IRI) is a U.S.-based, non-partisan organization that works globally to strengthen democratic institutions, promote citizen participation, support transparent elections, and improve governance and accountability.
IRI’s Work in Kenya
1. Electoral Observation and Reform
IRI has played a role in observing Kenya’s elections and issuing assessments on transparency, fairness, and credibility. It also provides recommendations to electoral bodies, political parties, and the media on strengthening electoral processes.
2. Capacity Building for Governance
IRI supports local leaders and municipal councilors through training on democratic governance, citizen engagement, and improving service delivery at the local level.
3. Youth and Leadership Programs
IRI invests heavily in youth-focused programs. For example, it has run virtual academies and leadership labs to train young people in advocacy, grassroots mobilization, communication, and civic accountability. It also partners with Kenyan institutions to provide political education for youth.
4. Partnerships with Local Institutions
IRI collaborates with the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) and other stakeholders to strengthen civic engagement and political participation. Recent partnerships focus on empowering youth to play more active roles in governance.
5. Election Integrity Reporting
Beyond direct observation, IRI produces assessments on Kenya’s electoral system, including the legal framework, dispute resolution, inclusion of women and youth, and the role of the media.
Recent Developments
IRI’s leadership in Kenya has engaged in new partnerships with local institutions to expand youth civic education and participation in governance.
The organization continues to provide independent observation and reporting around Kenya’s elections, ensuring accountability and credibility in democratic processes.
