African Clean Energy (ACE)

African Clean Energy (ACE) is a B Corp-certified social enterprise operating in Uganda, dedicated to providing clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions to off-grid and underserved communities. Their flagship product, the ACE One Energy System, is a solar-biomass hybrid device that offers both clean cooking and electricity access.

? ACE One Energy System

The ACE One is a versatile energy solution designed to meet the thermal and electrical needs of households:

  • Clean Cooking: Utilizes a solar-charged LiFePO₄ battery to power a fan-assisted combustion chamber, enabling efficient burning of various dry biomass fuels (e.g., wood, crop residues, animal waste) with minimal smoke emissions.

  • Electricity Access: Provides off-grid electricity for charging mobile phones and powering LED lights, reducing reliance on kerosene and other expensive energy sources.

  • Smart Features: Equipped with digital capabilities through the ACE Connect app, allowing users to monitor usage, manage payments, and communicate with customer support.

? Operations in Uganda

ACE has established a significant presence in Uganda, focusing on both urban and rural areas:

  • Distribution: Over the past decade, ACE has distributed more than 80,000 units across countries including Uganda, Kenya, Lesotho, and Cambodia.

  • Refugee Settlements: Implemented pilot projects in settlements like Kyangwali, providing energy solutions to both refugees and host communities.

  • Employment: Committed to local employment, with 88% of staff being youth and 57% women, ACE plans to create over 500 jobs in Uganda, particularly in regions like Mbale and Gulu.

? Social and Environmental Impact

ACE's initiatives contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with notable impacts:

  • Health: The ACE One's clean combustion reduces household air pollution, potentially averting 40 premature deaths per 25,000 units distributed.

  • Environmental Conservation: Households using the ACE One have reduced firewood consumption by up to 70%, leading to significant decreases in deforestation and carbon emissions.

  • Economic Savings: Users report an average of 83% savings on energy expenses, with 94% ceasing kerosene purchases.
