Palliative Care Association Of Uganda

The Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) is the national umbrella organization for palliative care providers in Uganda. Established in 1999 and registered as a non-governmental organization in 2003, PCAU is dedicated to expanding access to palliative care services across the country. It unites over 1,550 individual members and 30 member organizations to serve patients and families in need throughout Uganda.







? Mission and Vision


PCAU's mission is to accelerate the integration of palliative care into Uganda's healthcare system through capacity building, advocacy, research, and resource mobilization. Their vision is to ensure that all individuals in Uganda who need palliative care can access it.







?️ Core Activities


PCAU's work encompasses several key areas:





  • Capacity Building: Training healthcare professionals, including nurses and clinical officers, to provide palliative care services.




  • Advocacy and Awareness: Promoting the importance of palliative care and influencing policy to integrate these services into the national healthcare system.




  • Research and Information Dissemination: Conducting research to inform best practices and sharing information to improve palliative care delivery.




  • Governance and Support Functions: Providing organizational support to member institutions and ensuring effective governance structures.




PCAU also organizes national conferences, such as the Uganda Conference on Cancer and Palliative Care, to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders.







? Partnerships and Impact


PCAU collaborates with various organizations, including the Uganda Cancer Institute and international partners like the Center for Hospice Care in the USA. These partnerships have facilitated the expansion of palliative care services to numerous districts in Uganda, enhancing the quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses.
